I understand that my Great Grandfather Thomas Ryan was born in "Burras" Ireland c 1834, which I understand was a town or parish or area in Tipperary. He subsequently arrived in Bendigo Victoria Australia and from there joined the Australian Militia and was moved to New Zealand c 1863 where he was a reservist for the Army in the Land Wars. He married Elizabeth O'Brien (parents Lawrence O'Brien (b Castleisland Co Kerry) and his wife Mary - nee O'Connor (b Tralee Co Kerry) in  Cambridge New Zealand in 1867. Thomas died in Christchurch New Zealand on 2 August 1894

I an a descendent and I have been unable to find any details of Thomas Ryan's Irish family connections. I am obviously interested in his father/mother/brother sister names etc. I am visiting Ireland in November and would love to be able to connect with any family.

    There is no townland called Burras. Here are some townlands that are Borris or start with Borris. The civil parish is third column from right. There are also two civil parishes Borrisokane and Borrisnafarney. Others may have other suggestions.

  • G'day Peter,

    I searched on rootsireland for Thomas Ryan born 1834 in Tipperary and got 16 matches (attached).

    I then checked each for parishes with names similar to Burras such as Birr Borrisnafarney Borrisokane and Borrisoleigh but couldn't get a match!

    It's a pains-taking exercise but may get a result.

    As you said the year was approximately 1834 I searched for those born 1833 or 1835 and got another 66 matches. If I was to check each of these for the parishes above it would take a few hours but if you want to give it a shot I could walk you through it.
