Thomas McGrath & Ellen Purcell were married in the parish of Upperchurch in 1843.  They had 5 children that I know of,  Phillip, Thomas, John born 1848, Winifred & Mary.

John McGrath was said to have married Bridget Ryan and had a daughter Elena( born 1878, in Dublin) He appears to have come to Australia sometime around 1879 with Elena only.  I cannot find a death for Bridget in Ireland.

I cannot find a marriage for John &  Bridget or any record of  immigration for he and Elena.

John lived until aged 92 passing away in Melbourne, Victoria in 1939.

Any information on the family would be welcome.

  • Hi Elizabeth

There are only 2 marriage records for John McGrath & Bridget Ryan on www.rootsireland.ie/ ( a site which charges)

One is 1828 & the other 1842 & both are in Upperchurch RC Parish, Tipperary

There are 12 birth/baptism records of children of John McGrath & Bridget Ryan

    The first 10 are all from Tipperary: John 1828 James 1831 Edward 1834 Thomas 1841 Winifred 1843 Philip 1845 Judith 1846 Catherine 1848 John 1851 Mary  1852

Mary 1855 Cork Michael 1898 Limerick  - no Elena.

The marriage of Thomas & Ellen is there as are their 5 children:

Phillip 1844 Thomas 1846 John 1848 Winifred 1850 Mary 1853 - all from Upperchurch RC

There is a record of an Elena McGrath with parents McGrath & Ryand (but not John & Bridget) born 1836 in Tipperary)

There are 107 death/burial records of Bridget McGraths in Tipperary

In the Assisted Immigrants Index for NSW there is a John McGrath arriving with family on the Nile in 1861 aged 8 - closest I can find to an arrival

Sorry Elizabeth I'm a bit stumped on this one!

  • Elizabeth:

There is a civil marriage index record in the Dublin South registration district in 1877. The male spouse is John M'Grath and one of the three possible spouses was Bridget Ryan. The marriage is recorded in Volume 17 page 657. You can get a copy of the record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. If you plan to get a copy let me know and I will forward instructions.

  • Hello Roger,

Thank you for your work in finding exactly what I have been searching for.  Where did you search to find it?  Yes, I would like to pay for a copy from the General Register Office and would appreciate instructions from you as to how I go about doing this.

Thanks again, looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Thank you Col for your response.  Rodger has found me a possible marriage of John McGrath & Bridget Ryan.  My next task is to obtain that certificate and then attempt to find a death for Bridget McGrath as I do not think she came to Australia with John and his daughter Elena.  I cannot find a death certificate for her in Australia.

Elena's marriage certificate says she was born in Dublin so Bridget may have died there.

  • Elizabeth:

I have a subscription to www.findmypast.ie  They have all the civil index records from 1864-1958. Below is a link to the GRO site. ( They are now part of the Welfare department.) In the middle of the page is a link for a marriage record. Print out the form, fill out and include the registration district, volume and page number. You have to mail the form but you can ask the GRO to e-mail back. I give them a credit card number and the process works very smoothly.
