Hi

I am seeking information on the family of my great-great-grandparents Patrick Hurley of Ballymoylan and Bridget Genane of Youghal who were married in the Catholic Parish of Youghal Arra; County of Tipperary; Diocese of Killaloe in 1832. I can find no other Genanes so am concerned this might be a variant of another name.

Their children (I have 7 in total) were also born in the area and their Baptisms are recorded in the Parish Registers between 1832 and 1846. My great-grandmother (Winifred Hurley b.1846) subsequently migrated to Australia in 1867 to join her sister Catherine who had migrated earlier.

Any info would be appreciated as we are planning to visit the area this summer.

Cheers

    WWelcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I think Genane is a variant of Guinane or Guinan. The 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Yougalarra civil parish does show two Guinane records (Patrick and James) in the parish. I also searched Roots Ireland and looked at the baptismal records for Youghalarra RC parish and there were 23 baptismal records for Genane, Guinan and Guinane from 1829-1873.

What other infor do you need on your Hurley family. Did all seven emigrate?

Have you finalized the dates for your trip?

Forgot to mention that the Griffiths also showed two Patrick Hurleys. One was in Coumbeg townland and the other Pallasmore. I assume one of the two was your ancestor.

  • Thank you Roger.

I am still open to the suggestion that Genane could also be a variant of Gannon given that is the family name we had prior to finding the Parish Registers, so that makes three possible records in Griffiths'.

Looks like I'll have to "spend a penny" and take out a subscription to Roots Ireland.

It appears that only Catherine (married Daniel Daley in Sydney, Australia Oct 19, 1878, d. Paddington, Sydney, Australia Aug 29, 1902) and Winifred (married Peter Maguire in Sydney, Australia May 4, 1869, d. Paddington, Sydney, Australia Nov 30, 1901) emigrated.

I am unable to find death records for the other siblings (of course the females would probably have married..): Mary (b. Nov 4, 1832; Peter (b. Feb 2,1834); Bridget (b. Dec 26, 1834); Thomas (b. Apr 1, 1839); and Ellen (b. Aug 1, 1841). This could indicate that they too may have emigrated - I hadn't thought of that.

I'll follow up on the Patricks in Griffiths'

Our trip will be in August / September. We will be visiting my wife's family in Belfast (she emigrated in the early 1970s to NZ) then we will visit the South, as she puts it "interfering with dead people"!

    Thanks again

    Patrick
