My G G Grandfather was James Quinn, of Finglush mear Caledon. b 1811 m Anne Campbell 1843 Caledon Church of Irelend. Children David b 1844 Sarah b 1848 John b 1850 Elizabeth b 1852 Godfrey Alexander b 1856. The first two born Finglush. The last 3 born in Caledon itself. All the baptisms are in Caledon C of I except for Godfrey, whose baptism I can't find. James worked on the Caledon estate, eventually as a land steward, whatever that means. Godfrey's middle nmae is from the Alexander family, who owned the estate. I wondered if maybe Godfrey was baptised in an estate church. I have also looked at all the churches around and he is not there.

David,
Land Steward means he was responsible for managing the estate, or part of it anyway.
The records for Caledon Church of Ireland appear complete for the time around Godfrey’s birth. However it’s possible that the minister forgot to enter it into the register. That wasn’t unknown. There is also a second Church of Ireland in the parish at Brantry. Have you checked their records? Baptisms exist for 1844-71; Copy in PRONI.
I see no mention of a chapel on the estate, and even when they did exist (Chapels of Ease as they were often known) any baptisms, marriages and burials there were normally recorded in the main parish records.

Thank you for this info. I was never quite sure what land steward, James's occupation on his sons wedding cert, when he would have been 76. He was listed as labourer at his own marriage. So I guess a promotion. He didn't read or write but given that there is some intelligence in the family I surmise him to be an intelligent man. The most likely thing as you say is that the minister forgot to lsit the baptism in the register. I have checked Bantry in PRONI, and several other churches round there. They haven't go Middleton though, which is in local custody.
Thanks for the clarification on lnad steward.
