Hi,

I have a Bradley family who came to the US between 1820 and 1840.  Their gravestones say that they came from Lisbon, Parish of Upper Bodoney, County Tyrone.  Another says Lisban (or maybe Lisbane).  I think it is all the same place.  When I look up Lisbane now it is in Clougher Parish, which seems nowhere near Upper Bodoney.  I found on a County Tyrone site the following list - Tithe Applotment Book - Bodoney Upper Parish - 1825-6 Transcribed & Compiled by Len Swindley len_swindley[at]hotmail.com

This list shows Bradleys living in Lisbane along with McANENY and McATAGART.  Clearly the townland existed in 1826 but it does not seem to exist today.

Does anyone know the current name of Lisbane, Parish of Upper Bodoney?  I appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks,
Mary Roddy

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Townlands were not officially established until the 1851 census. A number of local place names were absorbed into a new townland and I believe that is what happened here. Usually in these situations, I try to compare people listed in the Tithe listings and compare to the Griffiths Valuation head of household listing.for the same parish. In your case we are comparing records from 1825-1826 to the 1859 Griffiths. The only person who appears in both listings is William Bradley. He is shown as being in Glenroan townland in 1859 and if this was the same person then I believe Lisbane was absorbed into Glenroan. Someone else may have a more informed view. Did you try to e-mail Len Swindley?

As an aside my grandmother was a Roddy from Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. Any connection to that area?

  • Hi Roger,

There may be a connection to my Roddy family but I just don't know.  My people came in the late 1840s or early 1850s.  One bio of a descendent in an 1880s era county history says "... from Mayo near Balina" but I have no way to confirm this.

I have been working with a map of townlands from Paris Maps of Ireland Depicting all townlands in the four Ulster Counties of Armagh, Donegal, Londonderry and Tyrone" compiled by the Derry Youth and Community Workshop under the direction of Brian Mitchell.  That has a map of Upper Bodoney and interestingly none of the townlands on the western end of the parish were mentioned in the 1825-26 tithe list, and there were 4 locations mentioned in the 1825-25 townland list that were not included in the 1851 list of townlands.  Glenroan is mentioned in the 1825-26 tithe lists and is at least 6 townlands to the east of the most easterly of the western group of 1851 townlands not used in 1825-26 list.

There were 2 Bradleys in Glenroan in the 1825-26 list, so I suspect one of them is maybe the father of 1851 Glenroan William.  I don't think 1851 Glenroan William is the same as the 1825-26 Lisbane William.

That is a good suggestion to email Len Swindley.  I will try that.

    Thanks,

    Mary Roddy

  • Hi Mary, I just came across your post from January 2017. I too am searching for records of my Bradley ancestors that immigrated to the U. S. from Ireland in 1836 I believe. They settled for a few years in Derry, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania before heading further west to Iowa. Felix, Peter, and Jacob were buried in St. Peters Cemetery in Windham, Johnson County, Iowa. Felix's headstone has the same inscription you note, " Lisbane in parish of Upper Bodoney, County Tyrone, Ireland." I'm curious if we might be researching the same Bradley family and whether or not you've had any success since you reached out to this group in 2017. The ancestor I'm researching is James Hubert Bradley born Dec 1828 in Ireland. He married Henrietta Wills or Wells around 1857 in Pennsylvania. Also, if anyone else has information on Bradleys in Upper Bodoney, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thank you!

  • HI Denise,

I have found out quite a bit more about the Bradley family.  Felix was one of 10 siblings - 6 boys and 4 girls.  One brother was a priest, Rev. James Bradley.   He left an extensive will, mentioning all his siblings.  I have been able to figure out all the siblings except for one sister.

You can reach me at mroddyn3@msn.com.  I'd love to share research with you.

    Thanks,
    Mary

William Bradley's Son Charles married Jane Anderson in Fivemiletown Co Tyrone down the road from Lisbane Townland, Charles worked for Thomas Anderson on the Anderson Farm Aghingowley Townland near Fivemiletown Co Tyrone, Charles married Jane 1st June 1853, the Bradley's were travellers and moved around the North of Ireland having children in various places, As I said my 2 x Gt Grandparents Charles and Jane married in St John's Church Fivemiletown, and moved to Fahan Upper Co Donegal where their son Thomas James Bradley was born in 1854 he was my Gt Grandfather.
From Fahan Upper Co Donegal they moved to Creaghan Townland Co Tyrone where their daughter Anne Jane Bradley was born in 1856, they then moved to Dame St Enniskillen Co Fermanagh, and lived there from 188 to 1862, they then moved to Castlewray Letterkenny Co Donegal where they had two more children John James Bradley born 1864 and Frances Bradley born 1865, from Castlewray Letterkenny Co Donegal they moved to Liscloon Townland Co Tyrone where their daughter Isabella Bradley was born, again they moved to Crevenagh Omagh Co Tyrone where they had two more children both sons Jones Bradley was born in Omagh in 1873 and Frederick Jones Bradley was born in Carrickmore just down the road from Crevenagh Omagh. Charles and Jane Bradley, finely settled in Crevenagh Omagh from 1872 to when Charles William Bradley died in 1884 at the age of 69 years.

  • I cannot find any reference to a Lisbane Townland, Bodoney Upper, in any official records at the National Records of Ireland,
There was at least 10 Places named Lisbane, 4 are in Co Down, including a small Village could Lisbane Village.
And a Lisbane Townland, Clogher, Co Tyrone which is between Fivemiletown and Clogher town.
    Regards
    Philip Bradley
