I am looking for descendants of William Anderson (Farmer) of Tulnavern. His daughter, Margaret, married my great grandfather, James Wilson (Farmer) of Cloughfin, son of Jonathan Wilson on 3 November 1870. The marriage was solemnized at Ballyreagh in the parish of Carnteel. My grandfather was William Wilson of SixMileCross, born in 1875 to James and Margaret. William immigrated to Philadelphia, PA, USA, where he married my grandmother, Lillie Gordon Kearney in 1912.  My mother was their second daughter, named Margaret Anderson for her grandmother. I have James' and Margaret's marriage registration that gives both their ages as 21 in 1870, hence birthdates in 1849. I would like to leanr more about my Anderson lineage and to find Margaret's death registration. She appears to have died some time after 1885 when their last child was born. She does not appear on either the 1901 or 1911 UK Censuses. James is there, listed as a widower with a couple of his younger daughters. I also do not know when James died. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

  • I assume that the 1870 marriage was in Ballyreagh Presbyterian, since you mention Ballyreagh? Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church, so if that was where she married, she may also have been baptised there. (Farmers didn’t move much). Ballyreagh Presbyterian baptism records start in 1843. Have you checked them? There’s a copy in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. The records may not be on-line anywhere in which case you may need to make a visit to PRONI.

A couple of possible deaths for Margaret Wilson 13.7.1888 aged 37 and 16.9.1886 aged 38.

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

The Valuation revision records show James’ name against the Cloughfin farm until at least 1929, so he may have died after that.  You would need to search GRONI’s records for his death. You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

He doesn’t appear to have left a will, or at least not one that required probate.

No Andersons farming in Tulnavern in the 1827 tithes so they may have moved there after that. William is listed there in 1860 in Griffiths Valuation.

The Valuation revision records should tell you how long he farmed there after that, and who succeeded him:
