I am seeking information on the family of William Reid and his wife Elizabeth (Heaney) of Aughnacloy.  William was attached to the Terlucan holdings and is possibly buried in the graveyard of St James, Aughnacloy.  I know of three sons who emigrated to America: (1) Graham, born April 1842 arrived in America in 1862; (2) Adam, born June 1845 arrived in America in 1869; and (3) Wilson, born April 1846 arrive in America in 1866.  I would like to know the dates of birth and death for William and Elizabeth and whether there were any other siblings.  Many thanks.

  • I went to St James', Aughnacloy today and walked around the Graveyard.  There was one headstone for Reids of Terlucan but it is obviously a much later generation.  I have attached a photograph of it for you.

I was at the Public Records Office today and decided to look at the records for Carnteel.  Unfortunately they only cover the period 1822 - 1842.  Having said that I did discover three birth records for children of William and Elizabeth -

Susan Reid born 10th August 1831, baptized 14th August 1831.

Grimes Reid born 24th November 1835, baptized 29th November 1835.

    Grimes Reid [2nd] born 16th January 1841, baptized 17th January 1841.

I was wondering if Grimes was the first name of William's father [just a thought].  There was a Grimes Reid who died 23rd March 1839.  I thought at first it was William and Elizabeth's son because he must have died at some stage for them to give another son the same name but this particular one was aged 69 years and was from Knocknarny.  There was also another Grimes Reid from Knocknarny but his father was Robert Reid [possible sibling of William?].

From the marriage entry for William and Elizabeth [not the best quality] you can see that William was actually from Knocknarny and Elizabeth from Terlugan.  They were married on 10th November 1828.  It's difficult to read but looks like the witnesses were James Grover and Robert Heaney.

I'm attaching copies of the births and the marriage [sorry about the poor quality] but hopefully you will be able to make sense of them and connect the dots.

    Regards

Sorry - there were more records as follows:

In 1828 John aged 29 years, Robert aged 25 years and William aged 18 years [sons of Grimes Reid of Knocknarney] were confirmed.  John Reid, Robert Reid and William Reid all had sons with the Christian Name 'Grimes'.

This gives us an approximate birth year of 1810 for William.  I would think Elizabeth was of a similar [if not younger] age to William because between 1829 and 1855 there were eight children [that I can find] christened whose parents were William Reid and Elizabeth Heaney.

    They were as follows:

Robert - born 21st and baptized privately 23rd of August 1829.

    Susan - born 10th August 1831 and baptized 14th August 1831.  Susan was buried 25th June 1849.

    Grimes - born 24th November 1835 and baptized 29th November 1835.

Graham [looks like Grimes but must be Graham] - born 16th January 1841 and baptized 17th January 1841.

    Adam - born 16th June 1843 and baptized 18th June 1843.

    Elizabeth  - born 31st March 1847 and baptized 2nd April 1847.

    William - born 7th January 1850 and baptized 24th January 1850.

    Susan - born 16th February 1855 and baptized 8th April 1855.

I cannot find any evidence that Wilson Reid was a son of Elizabeth and William.  There is a record for a Wilson Reid but his parents were Robert Reid and Elizabeth Moffat from Knocknarney.  This Wilson was born 31st March 1846 and baptized 12th April 1846.  The evidence would seem to suggest that Wilson was a cousin of Adam and Graham.
