Trying to narrow location of my ancestors coming from Co. Tyrone. They left about 1868, for Canada, settling in Ontario. Widowed Anne Blythe (nee Marshall) is believed to be the daughter of John Marshall and Ellen McLellan. She is understood to be the widow of William Blythe (middle name maybe John, born about 1840). Anne Marshall was born about 1840.. A daughter, Mary Anne Blythe, was born about 1857. There was a son John, I believe the eldest, a daughter (Eliza) Elizabeth born about 1859, a daughter Maggie (Margaret?) born about 1861.
Anne and her children arrived in New York City about 1868, enroute to Canada.

  • What looks to be the marriage of William Blythe and Anne Marshall was registered in Clogher, Co Tyrone 1849 volume 3, page 701. That marriage cert should give you gfather's names and occupations, as well as the couples townlands (addresses) all of which may help research back further.

You can order a photocopy from GRO Roscommon for ?4 per certificate. Put the place, year, volume & page number on the application form (anywhere). Don?t worry about leaving some boxes blank. You don?t need to fill them all in if you have the reference details. http://www.groireland.ie/ You have to post or fax the form to them but they will e-mail the copy certificate to you if you wish. Tick the relevant box on the form.

Tradition was to marry in the bride?s church (assuming the couple attended different churches) so that may be the place to look for the bride?s baptism and that of any siblings. Unless it was a registry office marriage, the church will be on the certificate.

  • Thanks for your reply!  Have looked at the transcripts available online for this marriage record.  Will go ahead and order the marriage certificate copy, and see if it can guide me further back, and pinpoint location better.  Would like to find parish church, and townland, if possible.  Was in Ireland (from Canada) in 2008, but unable to determine exactly where to go at that time, to discover where my ancestors lived at.

  • When you get the marriage certificate, let me know the couples respective townlands, fathers? occupations and the church and I?ll look for them in Griffiths and elsewhere.

At this time of year it usually takes about 10 to 14 days for the cert to come from Roscommon, once they have received it. (Not all the on-line transcript sites have all the information that you get on the full cert).
