I am looking for information on the Wildman & McIver/McIvor families in the Parish of Desertcreat, mainly in the Townlands of Moree, Gortavale & Drumballyhugh. My great-great-grandfather, James Wildman born in Moree in 1810, his wife Margaret McIver/McIvor & their son Henry, born in Moree in 1833, immigrated to New York State around 1840. They farmed in the counties of Sullivan & Ulster before moving to Grant County, Wisconsin around 1855. With them in the move from New York to Wisconsin were a Sarah Hawks & her family & a Samuel McIver. I don’t know if Sarah Hawks & Samuel McIver knew the Wildmans in Moree or met them in New York. (There is a Matthew McIvor in Moree, on the Griffith’s Valuation). The names of James & Margaret Wildman’s children, in order of birth 1833 -> 1855, were: Henry, William, Elisa, Letitia, Mary, Anna Margaret, Samuel, James & Louis.
I have been able to obtain a lot of information on the James Wildman family in America but very little in Ireland. What I have been able to ascertain is:
- A William Wildman of Moree signed a will in 1874. In it, he bequest his 4 sons, namely Henry, William, Robert & James his estate and “provided my son James Wildman does not return within 10 years from America…”
- A Henry Wildman of Moree was born in 1832 & in his 1896 will mentions his sisters Mary & Jane & brothers James, William & Robert. A Mary Ann Cardwell a widow who lived in England was Henry Wildman’s administrator.
- A James Wildman, bachelor, died at age 64 in 1916. In his will nieces Lucinda & Matilda Cardwell of Moree, Rock, Douaghmore, spinsters were mentioned. Also in James’ will a Joedy Wildman, son of Joe Wildman, was granted a watch. The will was witnessed by a Wilson Wildman.
- In a letter from Rev. D.J. Bell, Desertcreat Parish Church, it lists a marriage on 17/10/1835, between Wilson Wildman & Catherine Boyd. Also one of 12/7/1827 between Elizabeth Wildman & David Steel.
- There are Moree Wildman’s listed in both the 1901 & 1911 census. The Wildman names are William, Mary, Wilson, Joseph, Henry, Robert, John & Eliza. On the 1911 census there is a servant, 28 year old, Daniel McIvor living with James Wildman. Also living with James is his sister, Mary Ann Cardwell & his niece Lucy Cardwell.
- On the 1911 census Wilson Wildman is 23, Joseph Wildman is 15.
To the best of my knowledge there are no living Wildman’s in Desertcreat. I would be interested in finding any living descendants of Wildman, McIvor & Cardwell. Also the significance of the forename Wilson in the Wildman genealogy.

In the meantime, have you tried looking in church records to see if you can find any additional information?
Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. Hello There, I was born near Pomeroy in Co. Tyrone.
Back in the 1940s / 50s I know an elderly man called Wilson Wildman from the Moree / Gortavale area.
My grandmother was Mary Jane McIvor born in Co. Tyrone in 1873.

I've been researching the family of Robert Wildman who married Jane Wilson in 1842 at Desertcreat parish Church of Ireland. Their parents' names weren't given on that marriage record, but they emigrated to Saginaw, Michigan (USA) 1867-1868, and Robert's 1907 Michigan death certificate gives his parents as: "Harry Wildman, born England" and "Mary Steen, born Ireland." Jane Wilson's parents are listed on her 1910 death certificate as "Andrew Wilson, born Ireland" and "Ann Potter, born Scotland." Andrew Wilson was a surveyor who lived at Allen townland and The Rock, near Dungannon. He married twice and had many children.
If you're a descendant of this family, I'd be very glad to hear from you.
