In 1847 the following people left Ireland and settled in Innisfil Township, Upper Canada (Ontario). I would appreciate making a connection with members of any of these families still living in Ireland.

They emigrated from Dungannon, County Tyrone, Ireland in 1847 The emigrants known to be born in Ireland are in bold print.

1.   James Black b. 1802   in Ireland    married Mary Latimer  b. 1807 in Ireland

        d. Feb 23, 1882   in Innisfil, Ontario Canada.                 d. Mar 23, 1884    in Innisfil, Ontario Canada.

Their six children: Robert b Dec. 6, 1829, d. Jan 6, 1910  in Innisfil, Ontario, Canada

William 1834, d. Feb 27, 1916   in Innisfil, Ontario Canada.

                     Margaret b. 1835, d. Mar 2, 1880   in Innisfil, Ontario Canada.

                   James b. 1838,  d. Sept 26, 1915  in Innisfil, Ontario Canada.

Sarah b. 1845,                died in Innisfil, Ontario Canada.

The above Robert Black b. Dec 6 1829 in Ireland             married Margaret Booth b. Aug 1826

d. Jan 6, 1910    d. in Innisfil, Ontario Canada.                 d. May 6, 1884 in Innisfil, Ontario Canada.

2. John Black b. 1822 or 1824 (brother to James b. 1802)   married Mary Adams

3. Sarah Black  b. 1811 (sister to James b. 1802 and John b. 1822)  married James Neely

4. Isabella Black b. May 8, 1815 (sister to James b. 1802, John b. 1822 and Sarah at #3) married James Fagan b. 1808 (possibly in Canada, see # 5) in Innisfil, Ontario Canada.

5. James Fagan b. 1808, d. April 23, 1872  in Innisfil, Ontario Canada.

His two sons: Joseph Fagan  b. Jan 1, 1837;  d. July 17, 1922  in Innisfil, Ontario Canada.                                     Thomas Fagan b. Aug 30, 1840; d. Dec 14, 1918 in Mimico, New York

At some point James Fagan married the above #4 Isabella Black and they had a family born in Canada. The Black family tree, however, does not list Joseph and Thomas as full siblings or sons of Isabella Black – although some have tried to make this connection.

I would appreciate any information you can share about the Irish roots of these families as well as family still living in Ireland.

  • These births and marriages are well before the start of statutory birth and marriage registration in Ireland (1864) and so you would need to rely on church records to locate the events.

I assume your families were RC. Dungannon is within the RC parish of Drumglass. Their baptism and marriage records start in 1821. However they don?t appear to be on-line anywhere. There are however copies in the National Library in Dublin and in PRONI (the Public Record Office) in Belfast. Unfortuntely, a personal visit is required to access either set.

  • Book: Historical review, June 23-24, 1951 : a record of 100 years of progress : Innisfil Township centennial, 1850-1950

page 27 info on this Black family in Canada, same info as above posting, book published 1951

This is the only source I can find that they were from Dungannon,

I have an ancestor who maybe related to these four Black siblings.  Her name was Isabella Black 1805-1869 and lived nearby in Innisfil.  Would not be another siblings due to them already having a sibling named Isabella..

More information can be found on my Irelandxo message titled:

Three possible Hurst brothers from County Tyrone Ireland who immigrated to Canada.   William b 1785, James b pre 1809 and Samuel b 1796

Another Canadian source I have not looked at yet but want to is a book called: Farms of Innisfil challenges, chores and changes. published 2006 406 pages includes info on the Black family farm (one page or so)

  • Another book that mentions the Black family was from Dungannon

The Black family of Innisfil Township, Simcoe County, Province of Ontario : from Dungannon, County Tyrone, Ireland to Innisfil Township, Simcoe County, Ontario, in 1847

The family trees were prepared by Mayme Black about 1938.

Additions made by Grace Black after 1940.

    This index was prepared in 993.;

Retyped and reprinted with some changes in 2002

(It could be the source that Dungannon was their origin from the 1951 book that I mentioned in the previous post, likely oral history)

  • As for their religion, they were not Roman Catholic.

James sr was FC* in 1861; Presb 1871; Presb R 1881

John was FC* in 1861; Presb 1871; C Presb in 1881

*FC or Free Church falls under Presbyterian:

The two sisters were Church of England 1861 1871 1881 etc, both married at this time.

James sr had two sons married pre 1861 census.

William in 1859 by a Weslyean minister

James jr 1860 by a Weslyean minister

Perhalps they went to the church that was available,  The Weslyean Methodists had a travelling minister who wasn't in town every week.

    (1851 census did not survive)

  • I had not been receiving updates to this thread. Hopefully, I have rectified that.

I am about to take my 3rd trip to PRONI in Belfast. I now know that John Black married Mary Adams at Ballygawlley Presbyterian church in 1843; Sarah Black married James Neely at Donaghmore Church of Ireland in 1832. I hope to find more dates on this trip.

Perhaps we could share information by emails as I am also interested in the Hurst family?

Grace Black was my mother and I've been quite involved with Innisifl History for many years. I have provided some of the information you have cited.

    Susan.

  • Thank you for your response.

I am very aware of the Thomas Black family buried in Bethesda cemetery.

He was not a sibling of my 4 Black siblings who came to Innisfil in 1847.

A have photos and the transcriptions for Bethesda Cemetery.
