Drumhirk/Killyliss/Lisnamonagahan areas - Hackett ancestry

Hi, Elwyn, I'm back to posting again after reviewing more of recent reports from Irish genealogists.  Seems like the genealogist think the parents of John Hackett (married to Mary Flannigan) that kived in Killyliss probably originated in Cullenramer rather than Drumhirk due to the naming patterns and also that the Drumhirk Hacketts were Church of Ireland and our Hackett line was Roman Catholic.  Our trip is coming up soon as we leave the U.S. on April 4 and will be in the Killyliss, Cullenramer, Lisnamonogahan areas on the 7th.  Since most of the ancestors were illiterate, we expect that the graveyards will just be marked with stones, but some of the later generations might have headstone markers.  If you can help us with these questions we would much appreciate it:  1.  Where would we find the old graveyard for Roman Catholics for Killyliss that people from 1880 would be buried in?  Lisnamonogahan in 1894? and Cullenramer in 1882?  Where would newer cemeteries for Roman Catholics in Killyliss, Lisnamonogahan, and Cullenramer be?  We will be driving so any help in locating these places would be appreciated.   Seems like we don't really have phone books over here in the U.S. anymore - I guess because most people look up numbers online for specific people or businesses.  Is there a way to search for family names with phones once we are in these towns - like a phone book? or is everything online there too?  Also, we have found local pubs to be a great place to talk to people and find information.  Do you have any recommendations for local pubs in Killyliss, Lisnamonogahan, and Cullenramer?  I don't know how big each of those townlands are.  Thanks for any help you can give us.

Killyliss, Lisnamonaghan & Cullenramer are not big places.  In the 1901 census there were 23 houses in Killyliss, and 22 each in the other 2.  All are agricultural land, 408, 132 & 233 acres respectively. They are all in the same RC parish and so likely to share the same graveyards. Having said that, where you are buried is something for each family to decide and not necessarily the graveyard attached to the church you attended. Sometimes people have family plots some distance from where they now live.

I see that the 3 families were all farmers. There’s a chance therefore that they will have gravestones. Farmers were usually able to afford a gravestone, whereas the average farm labourer and weaver could not, and would be in an unmarked grave.

I am aware of a mixed graveyard in Castlecaulfield at OS map ref  H754628. (Mixed means it’s used by all denominations). There is also an RC one at H 769653. And there’s Donaghmore Old graveyard at H 768653. Not sure what denominations used it. I am not sufficiently familiar with the area to suggest others. I live about 40 miles away and don’t know it that well. I would recommend making enquiries in Castlecaulfield.

There are no pubs in any of those townlands so far as I am aware. It’s all just rural land.  Davisons Bar in Castlecaulfield gets a nice write up in Tripadvisor. There is also a ruined castle in the village (and just beside Lisnamonaghan) dating to the time of the Plantation of Ireland, which some have said is worth seeing. It seems to be popular for wedding photos these days, looking at the website.

There are still paper phone books here. Nowadays they are produced on a local basis, so the one covering my area doesn’t include Co. Tyrone. You can look on-line though. Search under postcode BT70 which covers the general Castlecaulfield area.

I can see 15 Hacketts listed in that area. None appears to be in the 3 townlands you are interested in, but the modern addresses don’t always show the townlands so I can’t be certain. And of course a lot of people choose not to be listed these days so there will be others not in the phone book.

I assume you know how to find the 3 farms? If you don’t, you can find their plot numbers on the Valuation revision books on the PRONI site, and then refer to the townland maps on the Griffiths Valuation site which show where each is located.

I'm not sure if you will will be looking at this site after 6 years. 

I have been thinking about my Grandma recently and decided to look up where she came from as I was thinking of visiting. Legend has it  her home was Duffy's Farm, Duffy's Hill, Lisnamonaghan, Dungannon County Tyrone.    Your post was the first thing to come up and  in the list of names  there was a Rose Duffy.  I checked her birth certificate and I'm sure it's her.   Her mother was Margaret Duffy nee Hackett and her birth date is the same.  I didn't know much about her family. I knew her  sister Mary who came to live near us and she had a brother Tom who may have come to the UK or ..... 

What was particularly  interesting is that in our collection of old photos there was a picture of a young man called Felix, my mum thought he was a cousin and have moved to the USA but I can't remember anything else.  I now have a son called Felix too!  I'm not sure what has happened to the photo, but it may be with my neice. 

My grandmother married Percy Bee who she met in Barrow.  He was in the navy and they moved around a lot but ended up in Chatham Kent where I am from.  Mary Duffy married Walter Randell and they had no children.  I never knew any other relatives

I was wondering how your search went in Ireland and what information you may have about the Hacketts?
