Looking for infomation on my McClean ancestors.   My ancestor Mary Anne McClean was born probably in Feb 1840-1844 (possibly in Tamlaght) married Andrew Thomas Moore on 15 Nov 1861 in Donaghmore.  Her father was John McClean.   I do not know her mother's name but believe it was either Mary Russell or Jane Barris.  I am trying to determine which is correct.    Andrew's parents were John Moore and Elizabeth Clarke.  After their marriage Mary Anne and Andrew lived in Pomeroy, Co. Tyrone probably on Gortna Garn Road and all of their 7 children were baptised in the Pomeroy Presbyterian Church.  About 1888 this family immigrated to New York City.  Mary Anne died 8 Sept 1904 in Brooklyn, New York.

Mary Anne had an older sister Eliza born probably in Dec 1832 who married Robert Kelley on 21 March 1854 in Donaghmore. Eliza and Robert immigrated shortly after their marriage to Paterson, New Jersey.

Thank you for your help.

  • What church and what denomination was the marriage in 1861? (Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church so that may be the place to look for her baptism). What was Mary Anne's townland (address) and her father’s occupation on the 1861 certificate?

  • I believe the family was Presbyterian as I know they attended the Pomeroy Presbyterian Church since I have copies of the children's baptismal records.   I do not have a copy of their actual marriage certificate.  The information regarding their marriage date is from records on FamilySearch-Ireland Marriages 1619-1898.  It gives their names, the date of marriage as 15 Nov 1861 Donaghmore, Tyrone, and names of their fathers as John Moore and John McClean but not the names of their mothers.

  • Marion,

Probably worth viewing the marriage certificate. You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

If you give us the couples townlands and their parents occupations from the 1861 marriage certificate, it may enable us to give you a little more information about them.
