  • Tom:

Here is a link to the 1859 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Donaghmore. Three Brannigans listed in Reclain. The four Morris entries are all in Altaglushan townland.

The 1901 census has two Branigan households in Reclain and at least three Morris families in Altaglushan townland. www.census.nationalarchives.ie

  • Thank you for the repsonse.

Does anyone know if Reclain and Altaglushan are stille there?  My bother and I are planning a trip to Ireland in June/July and would like to visit these towns.

  • They are townlands not towns. A townland is an Irish term describing a unit of land. Both still exist. You can locate them using the maps on Griffiths Valuation.

  • A number of ancestors on my Brannigan branch were born in Altaglushan. James Brannigan (m Mary McCrory 1838), their son James 1840-1886 (m1865 Bridget Donnelly of Killea, Pomeroy) and their 8 children. I wouldn't be surprised if they were related to the Brannigans from adjoining townlands.Did you manage to visit these Townlands?

  • Thanks for the reply.  My ancestors from Reclain/Altaglushin were my Great Grandparents, Francis Brannigan (b.c. 1819) and Susan Morris (b. 2 Mar 1819) in Altaglushin. They were married in Donaghmore Parish on 16 Jan 1838.  Their first four children were born in Donaghmore Parish, Reclain. Elizabeth 1839, John 1841, James 1843 and Brigit 1846.  Sometime after 1847, they moved to County Durham, England and worked in the Coal Mines there.  The rest of their children Felix b. 1849, Francis b, 1851, Sarah b. 1854, Michael b. 1856 and my Grandfather Owen b. 6 Feb 1860 were all born in Durham. They eventually all immigrated to Luzerne County, PA by 1869.  Yes, my brother and I visited this past September and we did go to both Reclain and Altaglushin.  We started in Donaghmore, visiting St. Patrick's Church and Cemetery, then we went a couple miles up the road to Galbally, visiting St. John's  Church and Cemetery.  We found many Brannigans in both cemeteries.  We also visited a of couple of people there.  Both were O'Neills, the first the wife's maiden name was Brannigan and the second Peter O'Neill's mother was a Brannigan.  Based on the dates, it's possible that your James could have been a brother or cousin to my Francis.  Where did your Brannigans end up?  Or are they still in Altaglushin?

  • I've only just found this website and have enjoyed reading this good exchange of information. Following my posting on 7th I've been having another look at the Brannigan records I've accumulated, and found that the death of Michael Brannigan (1886-1885) - son of James of Altaglushan was reported by his 1st Cousin Daniel Brannigan of Reclain, so there is definitely a brotherly connection between the Brannigans of Reclain and Altaglushan, which I'm now working on as obviously In answer to your question, some of the Altaglushan Brannigans moved to Durham, England, and some remained in Tyrone. Could you advise how you got the birth of Susan Morris, as the earliest Brannigan baptism I have been able to find for Altaglushan is 1838.

  • Sorry, I've just noticed a couple of typos in my posting yesterday. Michael Brannigan was born in 1866, not 1886. Further down "as obviously" should be deleted. Apologies.

  • Hello again.  While my brother and I were in Ireland (Tyrone) in September, we were directed to the Cardinal Tomás Séamus Ó Fiaich Library which is on the grounds of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh.  While we were there they helped us find the Baptism record for Sarah Morris as well as other baptisms in that family. They also found the marriage record for Francis Brannigan and Susan Morris.  He could not find the birth/baptism for Francis Brannigan, so I still have that hole in my research.

  • Many thanks! From what I've read about success with Irish roots, you seem to have struck gold! I don't think they've done so well researching JF Kennedy's ancestry, with all the resources they must have put into it. I'll try the Cardinal O Fiaich Library. I'm still trying to find female ancestors from Pomeroy who were born much later. Hopefully the Pomeroy Parish message board will be set up soon.
