My g.grandfather David Little was born about 1819 in Dungannon, the son of Andrew Little farmer and Elizabeth Bevins.  He married Isabella Poel/Powell/Pole during the 1840s.  They had 2 or more children Margaret born 1851 and William born 1859.  Margaret married David Williamson on 30 October 1874 in the Dungannon Presbyterian Church.   Margaret and David had 3 sons William, John and David born 23 Mar 1880 Gorshalgh, Tyrone.   On their marriage certificate David Williamson was living in Gortshallgan, Kiillyman.

They all moved to Scotland before the census of 1881.  M grandfather William came to Australia in 1883.

I would appreciate any information on Andrew Little, Elizabeth Bevins, the Poel/Powell/Pole family or any other associated information.

  • Hi there,

Unfortunately, the Roman Catholic church records do not go that far back (c. 1819). I have included some information about Presbyterian records below:

In general, Presbyterian registers start much later than those of the Church of Ireland, and early records of Presbyterian baptisms, marriages and deaths are often to be found in the registers of the local Church of Ireland parish. There are exceptions, however; in areas which had a strong Presbyterian population from an early date, particularly in the north east, some registers date from the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The only published listing remains that included in Margaret Falley's Irish and Scotch Irish Ancestral Research, (repr. Genealogical Publishing Co., 1988). This, however, gives a very incomplete and out of date picture of the extent and location of the records.

For the six counties of Northern Ireland, and many of the adjoining counties, the Guide to Church Records: Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, (PRONI, 1994) provides a good guide to the dates of surviving registers. The copy of the list held in the Office itself includes a listing of Registers in Local Custody which covers all of Ireland, but is much less comprehensive for the south than for the north.

You could try checking the land records for these people. The earlier Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) and the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com

You could also check the Spinning-Wheel Premium List (1796) for their names: www.failteromhat.com There are 7,150 names listed for County Tyrone.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,
