Hi there - I'm searching for Entricken family from County Tyrone. I don't have a townland or parish, but am wondering if anyone knows where this family might be from?
My G-G-Grandmother was married in Maitland, NSW in 1866 to John Woods from Cavan, Tyrone. She was born approx 1842 in County Tyrone, parents John Enticken and Sarah Coltin.
I have seen many different spellings so far in the Australian records such as Entricken, Entrican, Endrigan, Anstrickan
Hope someone might have further info
Regards
Brett

Brett,
Looking at the possibilities you have suggested, I think the name was Entrican in Ireland. It wasn’t very common. There were only 2 families of that name in the county in the 1901 census:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Cookstown/Loy___Part_of__Rural/1728319/
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Altaclady/Gortlogher/1750932/
The families were both Presbyterian (hinting at probably Scottish origins). Gortlogher (sometimes Cortlogher) is in the parish of Urney, near Strabane. Griffiths Valuation has a John Entrican farming there in 1858. Perhaps that’s your family?
Here’s a Rebecca Entrican from Gortlogher marrying John Entrican in 1852.
Sarah Entrican daughter of John married William Small in 1885 (so evidently Sarah is a name found in that family):
Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church. Sarah married in Urney Presbyterian so that’s probably the family church. Their baptism records start in 1837. They are not on-line, but there’s a copy in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast.
I looked for a death for Sarah Colston (wife of John Entrican) but did not find one. Death registration only started in 1864 so if she died before that there won’t be a record of it.
Probate abstract from the PRONI wills site. Probably related to Cuthbert in the 1901 census:
Entrican Cuthbertson otherwise Cuthbert of Glentimon Sion Mills county Tyrone farmer died 23 December 1940 Probate Londonderry 10 June to William Stevenson medical doctor and Robert McCarter farmer. Effects £2293 14s. 4d.
This may be his wife:
Entrican Margaret of Glentimon Sion Mills county Tyrone widow died 20 May 1943 Administration Londonderry 26 October to James Woods farmer. Effects £285 13s. 2d.
The Will of Isabella Entrican late of Gortlougher County Tyrone Spinster who died 17 May 1891 at same place was proved at Londonderry by Cuthbert Entrican of Gortlougher Farmer the sole Executor.
The above will is on-line on the PRONI site. One of the bequests is to the Rev John Entrican. (He’s the other Entrican in the 1901 census. So he’s obviously from the same family).
Administration of the estate of Marian Entrican late of The Manse Cookstown County Tyrone who died 8 April 1895 granted at Armagh to The Reverend John Entrican Presbyterian Clergyman the Husband
John looks to have remarried:
Entrican John of Molesworth Street Manse Cookstown county Tyrone Presbyterian clergyman died 31 March 1944 Administration Belfast 28 June to Mary Knox Entrican the widow. Effects £437 13s. 6d.

Hi Brett
My GGMx2 Sarah Entrican married James McAnee, 15 Dec 1871 St Columb's Long Tower Derry. Sarah was the daughter of James Entrican and Sarah (possibly Colten)
It is my belief that James died 8 Mar 1857 and Sarah, 4 Oct 1853. The were both buried in Urney Cemetery

I hope that this was of some help

Hi Jacqui
I'm not sure I ever replied to your message? So sorry if I didn't! There is lots of information there. Where do you live? I am currently visiting Co Tyrone and was shown through one of the Entrican houses today at Gortlogher. Theres a lot making more sense now that I have been able to drive around and see how everything fits in.
There is a Sarah Entrician on irishgenealogy who died in 1865 but the certificate image is not available - so I will go to the GRO when I go back to Dublin in 2 days and get the image - I'm think that might be Sarah Coltin.
Would love to hear back from you again if you get a chance.
Regards
Brett

Hi Brett
It's lovely to hear from you.
My 2x great grandmother Sarah Entrican was born about 1850. Where iexactly, I don't know. Possibly around the Omagh area of Tyrone. In the newspaper marriage announcement (1871) she is noted as a servant, living Derry and the 4th daughter of James Entrican (of Omagh)
She died 22 Nov 1874 (childbirth). Poor Sarah ahd a sad end to a short lived life:
Aged 21 she married my 2xgreat grandfather James McAnee; aged 22 she had 1st child John Michael; aged 23 her 2nd child James; aged 24 she died in childbirth with her baby daughter
Tragically, her 2nd child James would die a year later aged just 1yr 7mths. Their first son John (my 1xggf) would grow up an only child.
Most of the McAnee family still live in Derry, including me.
With so many variations, the Entrican name is a nightmare to research. I wish all the very best of luck. Ha ha
