I'm looking for where my Gorman line originated in County Tyrone. Patrick Gorman and Catherine Hagan left Ireland for Canada sometime between 1843 and 1846. We know this because they had 4 children born in Ireland and the 5th child was born in 1846 in Canada. What is known at this point:

Patrick Gorman 1804-1887, Catherine Hagan 1813-1872, married about 1829, children born in Ireland names and dates of birth are: Mary 1829, Henry 1831, Edward 1839, Patrick 1843. They were Roman Catholic, settled in the area of Beauharois, Quebec where they prospered as farmers and are buried in St Antoine Abbe.

Thank you.

    Happy New Year!

I looked at the Roots Ireland indexes and could not find a record of the marriage or any baptismal records for the children. This is a little surprising since most of the Co. Tyrone RC parishes on Roots have records back to the period of your interest. However, I think there are also a good number of parishes for Tyrone not on Roots.

Next summer the National Library plans to put the RC parish registers online for free searching. You have to search parish by parish which for you will be tedious but if you focus on one child maybe you will have success.

There is also this web site which may be of interest.

  • Thank you for your interest and reply to my quey. I am only starting to focus on this branch of my family and I am feeling hopeful. I have a great deal of info from Canada/USA but am lacking the link back to Ireland. I have heard there are only about 18 parishes that contain the names Gorman and Hagan and with the release of the new birth records this summer I may be able to find that connection.

In the meantime I am learning a great deal about County Tyrone. Thank you for the link and I 'm sure I will return to it time and time again.

  • Thanks for your interest Clare. I have been in touch with a nephew of mine who has actually seen Catherine and Patrick's tombstone in Quebec. That is how we know they came from County Tyrone. In addition to Tyrone, Catherine's stone in inscribed with 'Parish of Asihagh'. He searched 3 RC Cemeteries in the Ardstraw area when there in 1999 but did not find Gorman or Hagan, only a few Gormley and O'Hagan.

Perhaps it is a different parish. Do you have any ideas? Thanks

    Marge

  • Hi Marge
I suppose one thing to keep in mind is that there are lots of graves where there is only a marker stone (or not even that) as families did not always have the money to erect a stone. It's sad but understandable given the times
