Hello;

I am writing this to you from Canada. I would like to find out as much information on my grandparents as possible. They immigrated here to Canada in the late 1920's. My grandfathers name is John O'Neill and he was born in Cookstown. I know that he was a commercial fisherman on Lough Neigh when he lived there. He came to Canada, I believe, in 1927. My grandmothers name is Norah Ward. She was born in Omagh and immigrated to Canada, I believe, in 1929. I would like to find out as much as possible about them. If I knew what parishes they were from it would be a big start to helping me with my research. Maybe the homes they spent their youth in might still be standing or in use. I'm planning a trip to Northern Ireland this coming August and would like to make the trip with as much information as possible. Any information or assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks you so much.

Regards;

    I found two possible records. The John O'Neill in Cookstown was considerably older than Norah so I'm not sure he is your grandfather. I also found a 2 year old Norah Bridget Ward in Mullaghslin Glebe townland in the Omagh district.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hello Kelly,

    You need to apply for your grandparents marriage certificate in Canada.  this should contain their parents names. Once you have those names you can then search the online registers.    www.rootsireland.ie.    There are so many o neills in northern ireland that you will definitely need the parents names to sort one family from another.

  • Thank you so much for getting back to me. I have been able to track down my grandmothers family through the 1911 Census of Ireland. My grandfather is certainly a bit more of a challenge. Your suggestion of getting a hold of their marriage certificate is excellent and I will indeed try to follow that route. Again, thanks so much for taking the time to get back to me.
