Some new info since my last post.I have made 2 solid connections to one area. I have performed searches on ancetry, familysearch, rootsireland, tithe applotment/griffith's valuation. And now I can get no further.

James McHugh--M--Alice(or Norah)Deary pre 1865. With isue:

Patrick McHugh B-29 Jan 1865, Ballymongan, Killeter, Tyrone. D- 1950 Somerville, Ma.

Hannah McHugh B-6 July 1867, Ballymongan, Killeter, Tyrone

I can find no other children born to James & Alice(or Norah), nor can I locate a marriage or death records for either.

Nor can I find any possible avenue to research for parents or siblings of James & Alice(or Norah)

I see in GV, lease to James McHugh(co-lessee Felix Kelly) for 1859 & 1860 two lots #4 & 23 in "Tyrone, Omagh West, Castlederg, Termonamongan, Ballymongan. However in 1860, there is only one lot #4 still listed.

Any info or reference will be appreciated. Thank You.

  • The RC parish records for Termonamongan don?t start till 1863 so you will  struggle to find baptisms prior to that (if there were any). Likewise the marriage assuming it was in that parish. The records don?t appear to be on-line and so you would need to look them up if you are looking for additional children after 1863.. There?s a copy in PRONI in Belfast and another in the National Library, Dublin.

My reading of GV is that James McHugh had a half share of plot 4 which was a house, outbuildings and 24 acres. The revision records show him remaining there till 1886 when the tenant changes to Patrick McHugh. Then in 1893 it changes to the reps of James McHugh (indicating James was dead by that time). By 1901 James McKay is the tenant.

I can see a couple of James McHugh deaths, registered in Castlederg, that may fit. The one that to me is the most likely was in Jan/Mar 1881 est year of birth 1829.

  • Thank you ever so much!!! Is there any way to determine how long Patrick stayed/maintained the lease, apart from the "representatives" in 1893? My Patrick give 4 different emigration years of 1885/87/89/90.  He was deffinitely married in Massachusetts in Aug of 1893.

  • Not with any great accuracy. The Griffiths clerks revisited every townland every couple of years or so, and noted changes with the year of the change. The dates are often out by a year or two (as can be obvious if you know someone?s exact date of death for example).  I suspect that often either the informant?s memory was faulty or the clerks just guessed.

There?s no other information on the records for Ballymongan other than the dates and names I have given you (information obtained orally in the 1880s and 1890s and written in the clerks books).
