My GG Grandmother was Eliza Gregory. The family bible syays she was born in Tyrone, Aug 15 1827/28.  She emigrated to the US in 1843 and settled in Galena, Illinois. She came to join a brother James(1826) and sister Ellen(1818) who had already relocated.  Later, her sisters Hannah(?) and Ann(1822) joined them.

Family lore says her mother's name was Isabelle Grimes(Graham), but no one has been able to confirm.  Her headstone bears the place of birth as "Ballinsole"  County Tyrone. Obviously, I have not been able to find that  location. The closest we have come phonetically is Ballynasollus.  The family was Roman Catholic.

  • Hi Janet,

Thank you very much for your query to Ireland Reaching Out. I do not know the name 'Ballinsole' or 'Ballynasollus'. I do however know Ballinasloe, but this is in County Galway. Is there any chance that you have a connection to Galway? have you heard any mention of it in your family? It might be worth posting your query on the Ballinasloe parish (Kilcloony) profile page as well, just on the off-chance that it might ring a bell with someone there: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/kilcloony-galway

If you know the name of the ship she emigrated on, then you should check shipping records at the port of arrival. There tends to be more information available at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. There might be more detailed information about her on these records.

Have you checked records in Galena? If other family member had already settled there, then they would have to had filled forms etc. once they settled in the area.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney
