Hi, I have a question about place of birth found on a record for WILLIAM JOHN HAGAN. He emigrated to the United States in 1897, gained citizenship and a US Passport. He listed his place of birth as 'Cappagh, Pomeroy, Co. Tyrone'.

My question: Does the place of birth mean?

  • Cappagh = Townland
  • Pomeroy = Parish

Thank in advance,

Allison

    Hi Allison,

    Thank you for your message.

You?re very lucky that William was so specific with his place of origin!

Yes, I would say that it does mean the townland of Cappagh in the Pomeroy civil parish.

There are two very useful websites when it comes to place names in Ireland. They are:

    Thanks again for your message.
