Hello all

I am looking for any members of the WOOLAGHAN family from Strabane, Co Tyrone.  My gg grandmother Eliza WOOLAGHAN was born c 1833 and she and a Martha WOOLAGHAN b c 1830 were sent to Australia in 1849, probably from a workhouse (possibly Castlederg).

As this is such an unusual surname and can be spelled in so many ways I am making a study of all occurrences to try and piece the family together.  I already have all Griffiths Valuation references and have had a researcher look for public records some years ago.

I would be interested in getting in touch with anyone with WOOLAGHAN or similar ancestors, or if anyone can suggest some new or local records that might have become available recently.

Many thanks

Fiona

  • Hello Fiona and welcome back!

I see that you posted back in 2013 and received a response from our Northern Ireland expert. Hopefully, someone will eventually see your post and respond.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

  • Thanks very much Roger. In a change to new Microsoft Office software I lost all my historical Hotmail folders so wasnt aware of the previous post and reply.  Is there a link that you could point me to so that I can refresh my memory of the advice from the Northern Ireland expert please?

Since 2013 I have purchased Strabane & West Ulster in the 1800s, which has selections from The Strabane Morning Post 1812-1837.  I have also had a couple of responses from local churches as to their parish records, and of course have kept on top of new data available online.

As to DNA, yes I have been tested and have had my parents and brother tested too.  Quite recently, through GEDmatch, we have identified a person who shares some DNA and has ancestors McPhillips and Collins from the Sion Mills area.  Unfortunately we havent been able to link our families together as yet.

I have also recently convinced a Willighan from Northern Ireland who has ancestors fromm Sion Mills to be tested as well.  He has yet to complete the test so we will wait the results with interest!

    Many thanks and best wishes
