Hello,  I am hoping you will be able to point me in the right direction in my search to find out information about my family.

My Great-Grandmother and my Grandfather along with the rest of her children came to America circa 1890’s they came at different times each coming here to work and then send for the next.  My Great-Grandfather stayed in Ireland until his death.

My Great-Grandfather and my Grandfather were both named Thomas Poole.  We believe my Great-Great-Grandfather was Michael Poole.

The only things I know about them is:
My grandfather was born on May 1, 1875 (possibly May 2, 1875)
He would send money to a church in Affane, County Waterford throughout his life.
My grandfather left Ireland when he was 16 or 17 on the Majestic out of Liverpool, England and landed in New York’s Ellis Island.
He was a devote Roman Catholic and very grounded in his Irish roots – he raised his family to be the same.

My Great-Grandmother’s name was Margaret Finn – she married Thomas Poole
Their children, all born in Ireland, were Thomas, Michael, John, Patrick and Mary.  They also had an infant that died.

I am planning on visiting Ireland in August, 2014 and would love nothing more than to visit the grave site of my Great-Grandfather and to visit the church my Grandfather supported throughout his life.   Any information or suggestions you could make to assist in my search would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read my correspondence

This is probably your great-grandfather in this 1901 census record. He was a farm servant for the Walsh family in Crinnaghtaun townland in Affane civil parish. Looks like Thomas died in early 1907. See death index record below. He and Margaret married in 1869. See index record further down. Here is a link to the catholic Church in the area. If you want to get copies of the marriage or death records let me know and I will explain the process. Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Mr McDonnell, I can not thank you enough for the information about my family.  I would like, very much, to get a copy of my Great-Grandparents marriage record and his death record.  Please let me know what I need to do to purchase these.

I can not explain the thrill I got when I saw your response.  Thank you again, Ann Marie

Glad I could help. Copies of civil birth, marriage or death records can be obtained from the General Register Office (GRO). Go to this link. http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

Hit the link for a marriage certificate in English. You will likely get a screen asking for a User name and Password (this is a program bug that needs to be fixed). Hit cancel and the form should come up. Print the form and fill it out. Provide the data from the index record above i.e. 1869 year of marriage, Lismore registration district and the volume and page number (4 and 844). This information allows the GRO to go right to the record. make sure you only ask for a copy of the record and not a certificate. A copy costs around 4 euros. I provide them with my credit card number. I've done this over 20 times with no problems. You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you. Use the same process for the death record except you hit the link for Death certificate in English.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Roger,  thanks again.  I filled out the form and will send them off tomorrow.  I feel a few steps closer to finding my Great-Grandfather's final resting place.  It is good to have people like you doing such good deads.  My sister and brothe-in-law do the same thing for people from our area and I know they are appreciated also.

Have a great day!  Ann Marie

  • Ann Marie:

The civil death record will show the date of death, age of deceased, location, cause of death and the name of the informant. It will not show where the deceased was buried. I think the church would be the best source for that information.

  • Dear Ann Marie

I have been reading your correspondence about Thomas Poole, your great grandfather.

I have a copy of the 1901 Census and my great grandfather, Hugh Walsh, is on that same sheet.  He lived at Crinnaghtaun with his son. Richard, and daughter-in-law, Mary, and Messrs. Leahy, O'Shea, O'Loughlin and your great-grandfather, Thomas. The farm was sold in the late 1960s and is now Crinnaughtaun Apple Farm.

Have you any photos of Thomas on the farm?   If I had your e.mail address, I would love to write to you.

    Sincerely,

    Margaret
