Thomas Gray family of Clonea Co. Waterford, Ireland

If Thomas Gray was RC, then his baptismal record will not be available since baptismal records for the RC parish do not begin until 1831. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1115  

I looked at the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Mothel civil parish. There were two Thomas Gray records including one in Clonea townland. Possibly this is you ancestor.

Did Thomas stay in Ireland or did he emigrate? Did he marry and have a family in Ireland?

Hi Roger. 

Thomas immegrated to Holbrook, Iowa, USA.  I've attached his headstone, along with the translated notes.  According to the headstone, he was a native of Clonay, Waterford, Ireland.  He died at the age of 67 on Feb. 5, 1886.  That would indicate he was born sometime in 1819 (before baptismal records were recorded). 

Its important to note that his headstone is spelled Grey, not Gray as I indicated.

I do not believe he married in Ireland.  His wife, while of Irish descent herself, was born in Pennsylvania.

And I do not know when he immigrated either. But I will see if I can find that information.

Hi Roger.  Me again. 

It seems Thomas Grey/Gray (it is spelled both ways in various documents) arrived in the US through New Orleans, Louisiana in 1849 aboard the Viceroy, which departed from Liverpool, England. I won't proimise this is correct but it seems to be my man.

He definitely did not marry in Ireland.  That occured in Holbrook, Iowa, USA in 1856.  He and his wife began their family the following year.

I was trying to see if there were other data bases to check. If he left in 1849 then likely he was not the Thomas Gray on the Griffiths.
