  • Hello Barbara:

Welcome to the Ireland Reaching Out project!

As your research appears to be pre-1800, records may not be very plentiful for you. However, there may be some local history journals or books that you might consider trying to get hold of to further your research.

The link below lists some of those books:

    https://www.johngrenham.com/records/lochist.php?civilparishid=2404&civilparish=Kilgobnet&search_type=full

In addition, you might also consider creating a profile with the XO Chronicles for one of your ancestors.  That can be done by clicking on the XO Chronicles tab at the top of the page, and following the links.

If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Hi Barbara, bit late, but I hope this finds you well! I am of Dee ancestry, my grandmother was a Dee and her father hailed from Deelish, Co. Waterford, Parish Kilgobnet. Patrick's father was John, born about 1834, and John's father was Edmond. I would suppose that Edmond would have been born somewhere around 1800 so he doesn't fit with your Edmond, but I know that Maurice and Edmond are 2 of our family names - it makes me wonder if perhaps we are the same Dees from way back when? My Dee's lived for many years in Monarud in Co. Waterford, but after their marriage in 1874 my great great grand-father and his wife moved to Deelish in Co. Waterford.

  • hello Lauren, yes I believe we may be on the same trail! Our ancestor was Nicholas Dee who left Ireland for Canada about 1820--he was born in 1797.His father ws John Dee. john had a brother Morris who operated a public house at the bottom of Slievenamon mountain co. waterford. john,s birth 1775 and married 1793.there were about 5 brothers and one sister Margaret anne. The brothers were Ned(Edmond), Richard trhat are known.Others could be john and William. It is said they lived by the River Suir.

The names Richard, john, and Nicholas continued in our family line.My Great grandfather was a John(Jack) Dee a farmer.

    I believe John,s(of 1775) wife was Amelia--they married 1793.

our Nicholas married a Rebecca Elizabeth Youman  here in NB, Can 1821 in a Church of Scotland Hampton, NB

Most of the Dee,s in our family were engineers on the Railroad and civil engineers. we had nurses and teachers.

My brothers are Civil engineers and a charted accountant.

Please keep in touch would love to hear about your life in Ireland-- I am 66yrs old--how about you?

  • Hi Barbara! Sorry for the delay in responding, I didn't have a moment to spare until just now! :) I would love to know how you found your ancestors in Kilgobnet as far back as you have! I'm having a lot of trouble with anything before about 1800 since there seems to be a lack of paperwork from that time. If I could trace just a smidge further back I would be able to confirm if we were on the same Dee trail and when our trails exactly part ways!

I am 29 years old, originally hailing from New Jersey, USA. My great-grandfather imigrated from Deelish to New York in the late 1800's, and had my grandmother in New York. But I currently live in The Netherlands.

Hope to hear from you soon, and this time I'll be sure to write back faster :)

  • Lauren thanks for responding. My ancestors father was John Southwell Dee and it was verbally reported to my cousin that they came from around the river Suir in Waterford co Ireland.my cousin travelled there and spoke with a man who said the Dee,s lived in that area. john S. Dee was born in 1775 and married aprox 1793 the reported children born Nicholas 1797(my ancestor) and 1800's for siblingsThere were 5 brothers and one sister Margaret Anne.Names of the brothers were Richard, Ned short for Edmond, John and william. A cousin named Maxine visited Ireland and met a man at a pub in Waterford co who said there was a 17th century cemetery with the name Dee on it as well. They lived near the mountains and around the river Suir--maybe the town Carrick-on-Suir.With that information I found from Griffiths Evaluation records land rental by Catherine Dee and children Maurice, Ned(Edmond), Margaret, and a patrick Dee..This info is from an 1801 census with residents in Kilgobinet Parish of house #8(Colligan) waterford.Maurice is registered as a laborer and mother Catherine Dee.

I believe these are most likely the ancestors because the same names have been repeated in the family for 6 generations.this is my line--Nicholas#3(John#2 father of John#1) married Rebecca Youmans --son Richard then John H. Dee and then my Grandfather Lawerence Herbert Dee and my dad John F. Dee.

A man in Ireland works for the Morman church doing research and he found this information for me.

His name is John O'Donnell who has a connection to the Irish clan of Mahar.John O'Donnell I found on a DNA site 23 and Me.

John also carries similiar DNA which is most likely the Irish line.(found on My paternal DNA relatives)

Hope this helps you--I have a brother in NC,USA and many Dee relatives in USA.

Thanks again Barbara I am 66 yrs old

  • Lauren,

Are you still in the Netherlands? I haven,t heard back from you on this site and still wondering if we have a line connection on the Dee ancestry.

If you have DNA testing done on 23 and me it would clarify if we are connected somewhere. It is an amazing resource.

    Trust you are well,
