Hello, I have searched for ages to figure out where in Waterford my Hallihan relatives may have come from - after paying too much money to use rootsireland.ie, I may have found something which would make it all worthwhile if it is correct.

I found a marriage in Kilgobnet parish, dated 1 Jan 1850, of Patrick Hallahan and Mary Murray - no parents' names given, only witnesses (John Curreen, Anastasia Hanagan), officiated by J. Hynes.

What church would have been in the parish at that time?  Does a Catholic parish translate to one church or multiple churches?  And, does this mean that the bride's family was from there, but not necessarily the groom's, as it usually means in 20th century church records?  which would mean that this doesn't mean the Hallihans were from there, only Mary Murray...

This is the first time I have ever come across a record that is the right time period, the right names, and the right county, so I'm rather excited, and interested to learn whatever I can about the area.  Griffith and the Tithe books aren't helping me too much other than that in 1851 there was a John Murray in Balleighteragh East.  I don't find Patrick Hallahan/Hallihan/Callahan in Kilgobnet in 1851 - he took his wife and baby son to the US in 1854, but perhaps he was not yet head of his own household in 1851.  I did find a "Patrick Callahan" in the area in 1851.

  • Hi, I am looking at old queries and nearly 10 years to the day. It is normal to marry in the brides parish and Hallihan would be the correct name, actually worked with one a few decades back from East Cork, you can see the parishes here https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1111

Here is a surname distribution site, free to search that bit byt subscription after that. https://www.johngrenham.com/surnames/ also you can see it is the epicentre of the name.

In case you are unaware civil records post 1864 for all and from 1845 for Protestant marriages can be viewed here as can Cork church records, all free but sign in.

    Good Luck
