  • Edward,

Since you have an idea of what parish you want to look through, perhaps you should look for names which sound like couming.  I would suggest cummins.

Most people who emigrated in the mid 1800 were illiterate and had never seen their names written down, so the agent at port of arrival generally  wrote it phonetically.  I would think you may get somewhere looking for Cummins.

    just a suggestion,

    regards,

    Anne

  • Hi Edward, I have Couming ancestors in Co, Waterford, I have not as yet made any conection to Dungarvan where "Balleighteragh" is, ( east & west Balleighteragh ). My Coumings come from a little further along the coast ( Stradbally, Dunhill etc  )

Let me know some more about the information you have and maybe we can connect.

One more point, Cummins is a seperate  name but in Ireland you cannot discount any spelling. More likely are,  Cowming, Cowmey, Cowman, and Coomey. This I know from researching my own family .

  • I know that my Great Grandparents were married in St.Gobinet's Church Kilgobnet. It was the marriage of Maurice Donohue to Alice Couming on July 10 1886. Alice Couming father John was still alive. They could have been, which I am not sure of , Balleighteragh East.

  • Hi Ed, the area's you mentioned are all hill or mountain aeras near Dungarvan.

I think one place you call Kinafrehan should be " Kilnafrehan", this is also a Mountain nearby.

I need to look back through my genealogy files to see if I came across any of these districts earlier in my research. The places you mentioned are close to where my family came from.

Bohadoon is also a hill area in the same district.

I see that Tony Hennessy has given you some help, a good man with genealogy.

One interesting thing I read from the information Tony gave you was that Maurice Donahue was a Blacksmith.

My Couming Family in the 1800's were Blacksmiths in the region for at least three generations and some of them married other Blacksmiths daughters. Could this have been a tradition among Blacksmiths I wonder ?

Anyway I will get back to you soon.

    Donal.
