  • Hi Sheila

I'm afraid this is the only birth/baptism record for an Elmes with William mentioned:

    Name:Stephen Wm ElmesDate of Birth:04-Jun-1844

    Date of Baptism:20-Jun-1844Address:St. Johns SquareParish/District:ST. JOHN'SGender:MaleCountyCo. Limerick

    Denomination:Church Of Ireland
    Father:John ElmesMother:Maria BlairOccupation:Vicar, St. Johns

I'm afraid I couldn't find the marriage record

  • Sheila,

I looked up William Elmes in Limerick in the 1901 census and there is one with a wife Chaterine - may not be who you are looking for at all - age does not tally and he gives his place of birth as City Limerick - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Limerick/Glentworth__L…

What appears to be the same family in 1911 has Catherine and Ellen only. Catherine is a widow but in the 10 years her age has gone from 46 to 73. There may have been an issue at that time about eligibility for the old age pension which prompted such rapid ageing!

This may not be the family that you are looking for at all but it might be worth while checking the information you started out with i.e. you say William was born approx 1840 therefore it is unlikely that he got married in 1855.

  • Hello,

Thanks for the replies. I have his death cert from Limerick as well as other documents from my aunt who lived there. I also have the documents for Catherine as well. The census records for them are also recorded. I cannot find correspondence that I received back in 1995 about William that stated he was born in Kill St Nicholas, Killea area of Waterford. We are trying to get the rest of the family recorded. We know he was baptised Church of Ireland there and married Catholic church St Michael's to Catherine later. He was estranged from the Waterford relatives but also had Elmes relative in Limerick, but minimal contact. The marriage date if probably off by a few years, but I am trying to find the documents from storage. We have the birth certs of my great grandmother and other siblings. The dilemma is finding the parents and organising the other Elmes relatives outside our immediate family. If anything comes up, please let me know. We will be coming home for a visit and I will be taking a day trip to Waterford to have a better look. Thanks again, Sheila:)
