Am searching for info and decendants of Mary Flood. She was born in 1859, in County Cork. At some point moved to USA. Married a Ford Walker,in Fargo, North Dakota. She had two sons. A Harry F. Walker and John Walker.Mary Flood is my Great Grandma. She was Roman Catholic and died in 1931 in Fargo, North Dakota. Wish I knew more about her,but I don't. ( My Grandfather was Harry F. Walker. He was born July 16,1882, in Fargo, North Dakota. So somewhere between 1859 and 1882, Mary Flood, had come to America. Any help, will be appreciated!

  • Hello Mary,

You could start your search on www.castlegarden.org and look for Mary Flood.  This will entail looking at the entries and deducing her age.  If you find an entry that matches her age then look at that record and see what ship.  Then search the database for the ship and see if any other people named flood travelled on that date.  It really is detective work.

Regarding the baptismal records, Co. Cork is split between two websites.  www.irishgenealogy.ie and www.rootsireland.ie.  The first site is free and the second site is a pay per view so doesn't cost too much.

As you don't have parents names it will be difficult to find your particular record.  However you'll find that most children were named after their grandparents so there's a good chance that John or Harold could feature there.

Look also at www.askaboutireland.ie a free site.  Go to the griffith valuations and put in the names JOhn Flood in Co. Cork  and also try Harold Flood in Co. Cork see if anything pops up.

Hope this helps you on your way,

    regards,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Mary,

I forgot to say to make sure you keep an open mind regarding birth dates.  Nobody knew what age they were when they emigrated as they were undocumented.  Names were recorded phonetically at port of arrival and ages were only guessed at.  This is the age thast then followed them all their lives.  It has proven time and again that ages taken from tombstones and census can be 5 or 8 years out, so don't be rigid about the 1859 date.

    Regards,

    Anne
