G'day,
I'm a great grandchild of Richard Morrison (born Tallow 1850)
Richard was the eldest child of James Morrison (born c1821) & Ellen Gearin (born c1816).
Richard married Margaret Foohy in 1874, and they lived in Fermoy, Co.Cork prior to 1880.
They arrived, (with 4 children) in Sydney on 24 December 1880 aboard the Northampton, then lived in Waverley, Sydney.
I'm trying to confirm a suggested connection between this Morrison family and the Morrison family of Kilwatermoy.
The Kilwatermoy family is John Morrison & Catherine Walsh, married in Ireland, but travelled separately to Australia c1860.
They were the pioneer Morrison farming family of Springbank and Bulga Creek in Canberra.
Any connection between the Tallow family and the Kilwatermoy family would be appreciated.
Regards,
Michael

Hi Col,
Wow! Thanks for the quick reply and all the info.
Richard certainly had a brother John (b 1854) but this John (a bachelor) died at Liverpool, Sydney in 1911 and is buried in Waverley Cemetery.
The John Morrison from Kilwatermoy who I'm trying to find a connection with is a different line. This John M was born in Kilwatermoy about 1815. He died 21 July 1897 at Bulga Creek (Canberra) aged 82, and is buried in the the Pioneer Riverside Cemetery, Queanbeyan (NSW). He married Catherine Walsh c1859-1860 in Waterford. Catherine died 5 March 1907 at Royalla, NSW aged 80 (suggesting she was born in 1827).
Family records in the publication "The Morrisons of Bulga Creek and Tralee" by Les Lyons, 1974 - see PDF attached to the Tallow Parish Message Board - shown in the family tree in the Appendix - give the birth dates of John M and Catherine W as 1826 and 1841 respectively - which contradict their ages (82 & 80) shown on their headstone in the Queanbeyan Cemetery.
Thanks again for your message.
Regards,
Michael

Hi Michael,
The marriage record is on rootsireland but has very little info!
Date of Marriage:26-Sep-1855
Parish / District:Knockanore
County:Co. Waterford
Husband
WifeName:JohnMorrisson
CatherineWalshAddress:
KilwatermoyDenomination:Roman Catholic
Roman CatholicIf Kilwatermoy records are contained in Knockanore parish records as above, you might want to check the nli R C registers if you haven't already done so. (google nli R C registers search for Knockanore and the baptisms 1816 to 1833 are there. It's hard going but the 1816's might be worth a check in case John was baptised late. There was also a lot of mistranscription and inaccuracy through illiteracy / innumeracy.
The Tithe Applotments (also free online) have 5 Morrisons in Waterford in the 1830's titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/
There are Catherine Walsh baptism/birth records 1820 to 40 from Knockanore R C on rootsireland; : the earleist for John Morrison is 1833.

Hi there Michael
I am a descendant of John and Catherine. My family is still based in the Canberra district.
We have quite a number of written and oral histories of our descendants from Kilwatermoy. I also visited there some years back to see where our forebears came from.
I would be very happy to share stories with you.
What is the best way of getting in touch?
James

Hi James,
Thanks for your message.
Please be aware that I'm not a direct descendant of your John Morrison & Catherine Walsh.
I'm a descendant of John Foohey Morrison & Clara Clowes from Waverley, Sydney NSW.
The complication comes from Clara's sister, Elizabeth Mary Morrison (Aunty Mary) marrying John Joseph Morrison (born at Bulga Creek c1871).
Two sisters married gents called 'John Morrison' who really didn't want to know each other. However, my main aim is to find some proof that they were in fact related in some way - most likely cousins.
Best way to contact me is via e-mail: mckell154@yahoo.com.au
Regards,
Mike
