Hello,

I have a great relative, John Connolly, who married Ellen Lineen on 2/17/1844 in the parish of Lismore, Waterford,County.  They immigrated to Wales, then to Canada, and then to Sharon, PA.  Their son, Michael, who married Ellen Hickey, was my grandfather.  Somewhere between Wales and Canada, John's surname was changed to Connelly.  Is there a family connection?

  • Hi Joe,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone with information makes a connection with you and helps you to further your research.

In the meantime, it may be an idea to also contact Waterford Heritage Services to see if they can be of any assistance. However, please note that a fee may apply. Here is their email:

Here are some resources that you may find useful in your research:

    Church Records:

Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Lismore parish, follow this link:

    Civil Records:

Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office. Here are their contact details:

    Census Records:

You could check the 1901/1911 census records to see if there was any possible family still in the area at the time:

  • Hello there,

I'm more than likely related to you on the Lineen side as all of the Lismore Lineens were/ are my cousins.

My  great- great-grandfather, William Lineen,  was born May 10, 1841 in LISMORE, and died March 9, 1915 in LISMORE.  He married BRIDGET MOORE January 29, 1872 in LISMORE, daughter of MICHAEL MOORE.

    William's first child was Ellen Lineen (b. January 9, 1873, LISMORE; d. May 21, 1951, LISMORE; m. BARTHOLOMEW O'REGAN.)

Another of William's children was also called William Lineen.

This William had a son, Tom Lineen.

Tom had a son called Jim Lineen.

Jim Lineen was my Dad!      He did lots of research on the family tree but he could only go back as far as William Lineen who was born in 1841.

    Hope this helps!
