Hi, I am researching my GGgrandfather, Lawrence Flynn. I believe he was born around 1808, in Carrignagower. He married Mary LYONS (b. abt1816) on19 Jan 1832. We found Parish Record of Waterford with Laurentiz Flinn marrying Maria Flinn.

He was convicted on 4 July 1848 at Lismore Assizes and sentenced to 7 years transportation to VDL,Australia. His son James was also convicted alongside him but was only sentenced to 3 months in prison.

He spent two years on Spike Island, Cobh before being shipped to australia on the ship Hyderabad on the 13 Sep 1850. He arrived in Hobart, Tasmania on the 13th Dec 1850.

He and Mary had four children in Ireland, James, Bridget, Johanna and Mary.

We found a baptism for James O'Flynn, 19 Feb 1833 in Lismore, with parents Laurence and Mary. The family bible states his DOB as 25 Feb, 1833.  We have not been able to find any other baptisms for the other children.

Lawrence arranged for his wife and four children to join him in 1856 in  Tasmania when he completed his sentence and had raised the necessary funds for their fare. We have fairly complete records once the family reached Tasmania.

What I would love to find out are any early records from Ireland, such as birth records for Lawrence, Mary and the three younger children and anything else that might be helpful in my quest.

Thank you very much.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The online parish register for Lismore RC parish shows that there is a gap with baptismal records from February 1831 to July 1840. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0112   I note you found a James O'Flynn record in 1833.  I searched Roots Ireland from 1832-1846 and did find two other possible records which are below.

Thanks Roger for your very prompt and helpful reply. I think the Feb 1844 Baptism of Mary is a strong possibilty because "my" Mary was listed as being 12 years old in 1856 when she accompanied her mother and siblings to Australia. I was not aware of a Julia in the family, but she may have died young. We will need to follow up on this. I also found another Mary Flynn on rootsireland, baptised 4 Mar 1835. She is also a possibilty as James was born 1833 and my next one not until abt 1840. She must have died for the name to be used for the later child. Always something more to be done.

    Kind regards,

    John
