The Flynn children were born from circa 1833 onwards and lived in and around Lismore until 1856 when they and their mother joined Lawrence in VDL (Tasmania).

So, I think the years I wou;d be looking at were from about 1840 until 1856.

Can you please give the names of the children's parents. The number of "Flynn's" in Co. Waterford is numerous. Many children did not attend school in rural areas in that time period.

Records are usually kept in the original school, if still in operation. If the school is closed they are sent to the National Archives in Dublin - www.nationalarchives.ie - The more information you can supply the better the chance of success.

Subscription site - www.rootsireland.ie  - has many baptismal records, but they are only shown initially for the County.

Father was Lawrence Flynn (c1808) and mother maiden name was Mary Lyons (c1816).

Children arrived in VDL in 1856 with mother to join father after sentence completed and he had accumulated his 50% share of family's fare.

James aged 23, no education. NB James 1833 baptism calls him O'Flynn, but father listed as Lawrence Flynn and mother as Mary Lyons.

Bridget aged 16, can read and write.

Johanna aged 14, can read and write.

Mary aged 12, can read and write.

I have checked the subscription sites - www.rootsireland.ie and www.findmypast.ie but failed to find an entry for the marriage of Lawrence/Laurence Flynn and Mary Lyons in County Waterford in the period 1825 - 1835. No record of any children born in the 1840'/50's to this couple.

There is an entry for a baptism in August 1799 for Laurence Flynn in Tramore. There is marriage record of a Laurence Flynn in 1826 to an Ellen Murphy in this parish.

You mentioned - James O'Flynn. Record for him in Lismore parish - February 19th 1833. Parents: Laurence Flynn and Mary Lyons.

I found an entry in Military records - Halifax, England of a "Lawrence Flynn" having been convicted of desertion and sentenced to 7 years transportation. He is given Full Pardon in 1836.

Official records in Ireland did not begin until January 1st 1864.

Thank you for your help and research findings. I think the soldier is a different Flynn because we found Lawrences marriage in the NLI records of 1832.

I might follow up your suggestions of the National Archives and see if they might be able to help.

Further records - Laurence Flynn, Carrignagower, Lismore, Co. Waterford.

Attached for your information. You will see a "James Flynn" convicted on the same day. Possibly his son, as he got a short sentence!

Laurence was sent to Spike Island prison in Cork until his departure in 1850.

Townlands: Carrignagower East and West are in the Civil parish of Lismore & Mocollop.

Thank you for these records, however I already have them.

I have been researching Lawrence, my GGGrandfather, for quite a few years. I have all his sentencing and convict reports. Also his and his childrens records of land purchases in VDL (Tasmania) and their ongoing lives in Tasmania.

The only gaps I have revolve around his time in the Lismore area prior to his sheep stealing for which both he and his son James were convicted.I think James lighter sentence may have been so he could look after mother and siblings.In Griffith's Valuation I have found records of a John Flynn (possibly the brother listed on his convict record) working on a property in Carrignagower East with Mangans and Power men. These names are mentioned in the baptism records of Lawrence and his Mary Flynn's children.

The reason I am chasing school records is to try and fill in some detail of their Irish life.

His wife Mary, children, mother Mary and brother John were all left behind when Lawrence was sentenced first to Spike Island and then  transported to VDL. I have always been curious as to how they managed on their own during the famine.

I have also done my DNA, both autosomal and Y-DNA in order to find relatives as well as visting Co. Waterford.

I suggest that you Google - Education and Schools in the Workhouse - Desperate Haven - Source: Waterford County Museum, Dungarvan.

It gives an account of the problems that the poor had to encounter from poverty to ill health. Dungarvan town is only a short distance from Lismore.
