Richard L Power, born 1841, in Waterford area, son of John Power and Catherine Morrissey, died in Halifax in 1933 - listed among his survivors was a brother James, of San Francisco, California.

Richard came to Halifax Nova Scotia via New York in the 1860's, holding a letter of reference from the Duke of Devonshire's estate, Lismore Castle, where he had been employed as a gardener.

If anyone has any information about his parents, John and Catherine, or any other brothers and sisters, I would appreciate hearing from you.  Thanks!

  • Hello there and greetings from Waterford

I had a look online at the Co. Waterford parish registers and found the following:

Baptisms of children of John Power and Catherine Morrissey in Co. Waterford:

    Martin 1830, Bartholomew 1835, Mary 1839, Richard 1841, John 1843.

Further details from the site ie. parish & townland names, godparents names, specific dates etc. require a payment to the site.  If you wish to explore it further drop me a line at waterfordorigins@gmail.com

I also found a brief entry in the assisted emigration books of the Devonshire Estate

'Charities paid Richard Power to assist him to go to America. Amount Paid; 10 Shillings. 18 May 1872.

Unfortunately it doesn't give a specific address but it was within the lands of the Estate.

Lismore Castle, the seat in Ireland of the Duke of Devonshire, is beautifully situated overlooking the picturesque Blackwater river.  Waterford is a coastal county in the sunny south east of Ireland.  I may be biased saying it's the nicest county in Ireland.  You might have to call by and make up your own mind!

Hope the above is of help to you

    Warm wishes
