Looking for details of my 2x great grandfather's childhood home.  Here's what I know:

Thomas Grey born circa 1816. Had a brother named Mathew (Matthew) and 2 sisters; Margaret and Hanora.

Thomas attended high school in Tipperary and the college of Kill but was called home when his father fell ill and died.  After their mother passed, all 4 children left Ireland for the US. They arrive in 1849 and made their way to Holbrook, Iowa where they farmed.

My family will be in Ireland at the end of this month (August 2024). I would love to learn where in Clonea the family farm was so I can visit. I'd also like to know where his parents are buried so I can pay respects.

Can anyone assist?  In advance, thank you.

Laura

P.S. Roger helped me find my Walsh family townland a few years ago. We'll be meeting up with relatives this trip as a result!  Thanks, Roger!! You're the best.

  • This is Clonalea........
    Clonalea Townland, Co. Tipperary (townlands.ie)

Sorry but there are very few Birth and Death records in the early 1800's for that area.
But,   you can see Tithe records and working out where Clonalea is located there are four males in the Tithe records, 1823 to 1837.
the top four on this list is the Parish Barnane-ely    After the family went to the USA Parishes and townlands changed names.
Nenagh as you see on the map above is the County town, go to the Nenagh Heritage Centre, they will help.
The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 (nationalarchives.ie)
In 1846 I see a marriage of a George Grey........says father is James, so he must be the James in the Tithe records.
They are in the area of Barnane as in the Tithe records.

  • Laura,

Perhaps one of these is your ancestor...

The following Grays were listed in the Tithe Applotment Books in Waterford. Four of them lived in the parish of Kilbarrymeaden.

    • Gray              Thos      Gardenmorris And Sleevin             Kilbarrymeaden  Waterford           1833
    • Grey              Richd     Caherowane       Kilbarrymeaden  Waterford           1833
    • Grey              V             Kilbarrymeadon Kilbarrymeaden  Waterford           1833
    • Grey              R             Kilbarrymeadon Kilbarrymeaden  Waterford           1833
    • Grey              James    Ballynacurra       Mothel  Waterford           1827

  • Note, in above list, the James Grey in Ballynacurra was in the parish of Mothel, the same parish as Clonea townland.

In Griffith's Valuation in 1863, there were two Grays in Mothel parish, one in Clonea:

Griffith Gray Thomas Ballynacurra Mothel Co. Waterford
Griffith Gray Thomas Clonea Mothel Co. Waterford

You can see more info at askaboutireland.ie.

Although your Grays had left Ireland by 1863, it is likely there were relatives still in Clonea.
