Cullinane Family from Newtown Parish/District Kilmacthomas, County Waterford

Thanks to ColCaff a volunteer from Ireland XO I confirmed that my grandmother, Mary Cullinane, was born in Newtown, County Waterford. Sorry, Colcaff but my original message and your reply disappeared off my computer, I hope this message reaches ColCaff and other members of Rossmire Parish.

My Great Grandfather, John Cullinane and Great Grandmother mother Elizabeth Moore lived on a Newtown farm and and my grandmother was born in 1874. Llater moved to Bishopstown, Mothel, approx, 6 miles to the north and in 1885 they moved to St Louis, MO. I am now tracing my Cullinane Family from the Newtown / Kilmacthomas area.  There is a Rossmire Catholic Civil Parish which I have joined but the boundries of the parish have changed through time.  Does this Cullinane name from Rossmore,Newtown and Kilmacthomas area bring up any Ideas. .

Newtown is also the home of the "Newtown Rebel Sisters".(Cullinane girls). Bridget, Hannah, Mary and Mother Catherine operated a Public House/groceries. During the Civil War. The Store was the centre for dispatches and a safe house for volunteers . The sisters acted as lookouts, gathered intelligence, hid and transported arms. They were eventually put in prison and also lost some of the men in their lives. I amd searching to see if they are part of my Cullinane family.  Does anyone know about these patriotic and brave girls family.

Here's the record again from www.rootsireland.ie/:

    Name:Mary CullinaneDate of Birth:23-Aug-1874
    Registration Date:
    Address:NewtownParish/District:KilmacthomasGender:FemaleCountyCo. Waterford
    Denomination:Civil Parish / District
    Father:John CullinaneMother:Elizabeth MooreOccupation:Farmer

    Notes:

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
    Place of birth: Newtown.
    Informant: Cullinane John (Father).
    Informant address: Newtown.
    Registration Date: 10 SEP 1874.
    Registrar: Kirwan A.W..
    Register: KILMAC BTH BK 5.
    Union: Kilmacthomas

However I can't find the parents' marriage record which may have John's father's name

I notice you have John's birth as 1847 & his father as James on your tree on ancestry so I checked for corresponding records on roots without success I'm afraid.

The closest were 1844 & 1851 both from Cork

I then tried to work back from the 3 girls, Bridget, Hannah & Mary with mother Catherine to see if I could find their births and connect the parents.

There were parents James Cullinane and Catherine Brazil who had 14 children in Waterford - some in Dungarvan - there are a Bridget & Mary but no Hannah.

As you have a James as John's father it looks promising that the James father of 14 could be connected

I don't know whether dna testing would sort it for you Bill; it's very frustrating that the records aren't there given it's after 1864 we're looking for!!

Bill there are 11 Cullinanes in Waterford in the irish phone book (www.118.ie/) People Search

You could run off a letter setting out your line and that of the girls to see if anyone is connected - often works

  • ColCaff;

I'm back working on my Cullinane Family. Sorry for the two year delay.

I found my my GGrandfather's "John's" Grave in St Louis, MO and on his grave it says "Born iin Bishopstown.". After my Grandmother Maria(Mary) Cullinane was born, the family moved from Newtown area to Bishopstown and had two additional children, James(1878) and Elizabeth (1882). A james and a John Cullinane both rented two 60 acre parcels in Bishopstown at that time. I assume my GGrandfather John and family lived with either John or James Cullinane on their farms, My GGrandfather John and  family left for St Louis, MO, USA in 1884 -+.  Also the family that lives on one of these 60 acre parcels today is related to the Cullinanes four generations back.(1880's) .

I have been looking for any connections between the Cullinane Girls and my Cullinane relatives. There were plenty of Cullinanes living in area but I have not been able to find all the girls and the mother. The original Cullinane and Brazel family may have been the parents of the whole Cullinanes families.
