Hello, my name is Karen and I am currently researching my maternal side of the family tree. I have traced back as far as my Grt Grt Grandfather and on the 1911 Census it tells me his birthplace was Waterford, Trinity Without. His name was James Doherty, born 1858. On his marriage certificate his fathers name said Lawrence Doherty, deceased. That was dated 1890. That is the only information I have and would love to find out more. It would be great if you could help.

I presume the 1911 census was the English census rather than the Irish census. I looked at the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Trinity Without parish. There was an entry for a Lawrence Doherty in Clashrea townland Yellow Road. I assume this is e father of James.

  • Roger,

Thanks for the info, it will help me move forward with my research now. Yes the 1911 census was English and Lawrence Doherty is James 's Father. It is very difficult to access any Irish Census and church records. I wonder if their local church was the church of the holy trinity, without. I think my next move will be to find out James birth and if he had any siblings and who his Mother was.

    Many Thanks.

  • Karen:

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has an 1857 baptismal record for a James Doherty father Laurence in the Trinity Without RC records.

Roots is a pay site to view transcriptions of church records. Roots now has a subscription process to see there records.

There may be at least four siblings. I checked Roots and there are four other Doherty children baptismal records from 1847-1867 with a father named Laurence. I could not check the parish because Roots requires a first name before you can use the parish search process.
