I have been looking at family history and have traced my Great Grand Parents to Trinity Without , their names are James Humphrys and Ellen Kelter who were married there on the 23rd March 1892 , if i am right this parish will be the parish for Ellen Kelter, or both Ellens parents were Andrew and Catherine Kelter , and James parents were Robert and Bridget Humphrys.

If there is any info that can help to trace more , it will be very welcome.

  • Hello Ish,

I went to www.rootsireland.ie and found the marriage for Ellen and James in 1892 as you said.  I then went back a little further to see if I could find anything regarding the Kelters.  As it's such an unusual name I was pleased to find the baptismal record for Ellen.

Ellen Kelter, father Andrew Kelter, mother Catherine, born 1865 in Co. Kilkenny

I went to the Kilkenny site and found that the parish was Slieverue which is on the border with Waterford.

I also found the marriage of Robert Humphrys and Bridget in 1858 in Co. Waterford in the parish of St. John.

I haven't viewed these records as it's a pay per view site.  It's free to join and search but you pay about €5 to open a record.  However this site has a promotion of 40% off at the moment until October 13th so you may be searching at a very opportune time.

It's well worth viewing these records as they may give you townslands or more information.

    Hope this helps you ,

  • Hello Ish,

In case you haven't already seen it, the census for 1901 is available online and I found James and ellen with their children in Cathedral Place in Waterford.

there are also a number of Kelters in the census also.  When you open the document online, you can click on the original return to get more information on the household etc.

  • Hi Anne

Got you reply , and was wondering how you have a interest in the Kelter Family , as i said i am a Great Grand Child of James and Ellen , there is also a Joe Aherine looking into the family background so you may come accros him at some stage, he is a second cusion..

The info you gave will help a lot for Joe and myself, i was wondering if you have ever heard of the Kelter family roots, i have heard it was on the German-Austrian borders, and the name may have been changed from Kelsh when they arrived in Ireland, but as you know things get added on with time so cant be sure of this.

In looking into the family we have come across Robert Humphrys, who was a son of James and Ellen,he was in the G.P.O in 1916 sent to prison in Wales after the rising, and then went on to fight in the war of independince as of yet we are still looking for more info on this person.

If you want to find out anything about the family here in Dublin my e-mail is christyedwards56@gmail.com , i will be passing the info to Joe as well.

    Thanks for the help

    Hi Christy,

I am one of the volunteers trying to help people trace their ancestors.  I had never heard of the name Kelter before I saw your post.  If you go to the Irishtimes/ancestors site you will find that the name Kelter was most prevalent in Co. Kilkenny in the mid nineteenth century.  45.5% of all the Kelter families lived in Kilkenny with most of the rest in Northern Ireland.   I am wondering if they came from the North with an Industry that was set up in Kilkenny???   I have to say that I assumed it was a Scottish name as many of the northern names are.

If you get Ellens baptismal cert it will hopefully contain a townsland, and you can then go to Griffith valuation to see how many falilies of Kelter there were there and what was the predominant industry?
