Hello,

I've posted previously, but I'm still not sure I have the right information and I'm not sure how to confirm it. My grandfather was Richard Ruth; he may have been Cornelius Richard or Richard Cornelius. He left Ireland in the late 1890s or early in the 20th century and arrived in New York where he had a sister named Joanna. He reported that he was from Limerick. Unfortunately we are having trouble getting any additional information on him, including no record of his death in December 1953. This is strange because of course my father knew where he lived and attended his death.

As best I can trace, he was born in August 1886 and his parents were Mary Martin and Michael Ruth. While i cannot see any evidence of a sister, Joanna, I do know she existed and emigrated as well. We believe he may have married in Ireland and then come to NYC, where his first wife died.

I will be in Ireland next month and would dearly love to locate my great grandparents' graves, the churches they worshipped in and/or any remaining family-though I know that is a long shot. Can anyone help? Should I be hiring someone at this point?

Thanks,

Betty J. Ruth

Below are the 1901 and 1911 census records for your Ruth family. Richard was still in Ireland as of 1911. The family lived in Cappamore town, Tuogh civil parish and by 1911 were living in Doon townland in Tuogh civil parish which is in the northeast corner of Co. Limerick..

Below is a link to Doon Catholic church. There is also a St. Michaels church on Main St. in Cappamore. Likely your relatives might be buried at Doon.

As shown in 1911 the Ruths lived in Portnard townland in Cappamore parish. My Mum Delia remembers them as they worked for her Meehan family in the same townland.  As a genealogist I could undergo searches and checks on your behalf. My e mail is foxseamus@gmail.com.

  • Hi Roger,

Alas, if it's true that Richard was living there in 1911, then it can't be my grandfather as he had already married and had children by that time. In fact my father was born in 1909. I guess these are not my relatives :(

It's all so frustrating. He told us he was from Limerick. He had a sister named Joanna. There is, as far as I can tell from looking at the "Roots' website, a family in WATERFORD, not Limerick, with two children named Joanna and Richard Cornelius (which was my grandfather's middle name). However, someone said that the Waterford Richard C had emigrated to England and had something of a career as a politician or something....which would be highly unlikely in my family given our Republicanism and my grandfather's life in the US or what I know of it.

Any advice on how to get started again? Richard Cornelius Ruth seems a unique name, yet I'm not getting anywhere.

    Thanks,
