Hello,

I am trying to research my great, great-grandparents, Philip and Catherine Finlay.  Their son, my great-grandfather, is Francis Finlay, who came to the U.S. as an infant in 1857 with his mother Catherine, but I don’t know if the father Philip ever emigrated from Ireland to the U.S. or anything about Philip or Catherine’s parents in Ireland.  I believe Catherine (née McDonnell) and Philip were both born in 1830.  They had 3 children in that parish: Michael, Ann, and Francis. Does anybody have more information about Philip Finlay or Catherine’s Family in Kilbeggan?  Thank you!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Roots Ireland did not have a Philip Finlay baptismal record.around 1830. I did find a Catherine McDonnell record in Rochfortbridge in 1829 (see below). I did not find a marriage record for the couple. I found four baptismal records for children of Philip and Catherine. Possibly Bess was Anne. Roots did not have any death records for Kilbeggan church in the 1850s.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Roger,

Thank you so much for your reply!  I found similar records about Francis’s sibling Michael, and I also found his sister Anne, and those names and dates match my U.S. census records in New Jersey. I wasn’t aware of Bess, so that will be interesting to further investigate.  Thanks for the information on Catherine McDonnell.  I found one other possible lead on Catherine McDonnell, also born 1829, but in Ballyloughloe, Westmeath (father James, mother Anne Daly).  So, I’m not sure which Catherine McDonnell is Francis, Michael, and Anne’s mother.

I did find a possible lead on Philip Finlay (Francis, Michael, amd Anne’s father), but it’s spelled Finly and it’s from Parish Drumgoon, County Cavan, baptised 10 November 1839.  I did find a record for the marriage of a Philip Finly in 1831, which could be Philip Finaly’s father.  That marriage was in Rochfortbridge too.

    Thank you very much!

I did see the 1831 marriage record and it was Philip Finly and Catherine McDaniel.

The 1839 Cavan record won't work if he had a child in 1845.
