John Joseph Lynch

DOB:15th April 1926

Born: Ballinilard, Tipperary

Lived: Killucan

Colchester, Essex, UK

Died: London 27th December 2004

He joined the Irish Army as a young man and later transferred to the British Army and served in Korea.

Here are some of the snippets of information we have about him.

His father was James Andrew Lynch and was a Civil Bill Officer, Eire Civil Service.

He had an older brother Christopher who we believe was born in Thurles.

His mother was Annie Kelly. She died in childbirth with her 3rd child. We believe she had sisters in the Killucan area and they raised my father and his brother after her death.

The family was involved in farming. They lived in a property next to the Royal Canal where there was a large piece of farm equipment in the middle of the canal that had been there for years. There was a pond that attracted a large amount of geese or ducks each year. After the death of James Lynch Christopher was in charge of the farm but later went to join a monastery. At some point he left the monastery and was married. John and Christopher were educated by the Christian Brothers. John’s confirmation names were Michael Edward.

We found memorial prayer cards in his belongings for Kathleen Mitchell who died in Brutonstown on 12th February 1972 age 70 yrs. Also one for a small girl, Margaret Mary McKenna, from Raharney who died 18th December 1972 aged 3 yrs and 4 months. There was also a photo of Sheila and Martha Mitchell.

To add to our confusion there was another John Lynch born in Ballinilard on the same date whose parents’ names were James and Annie.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Jane

  • Dear Jane

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

I have had a look for a marriage for a James and Anne and located a civil marriage record in the civil parish of Emly, Co. Tipperary. This couple were married on 21st January 1920. His father was James and hers Patrick. He was from the townland of Kilfinan and worked as a labourer and she from the townland of Clerkstown and she worked as a servant (Clerkstown is in the neighbouring civil parish of Latin). James married at 26 giving him a date of birth of c.1894 and Annie aged 20 giving her a date of birth c. 1900. Births registered after 1916 would have to be ordered at the General Register Office - this will allow you to learn as much as you can about the family, perhaps a sponsor's name will provide an insight.

Have you contacted the National Archives in Kew, London to see if they can provide you with any further information about John?

Having gathered as much information as you can , I would suggest checking Ancestry.com to see if there are any public family trees that share the same info that you could contact. If you don't have an Ancestry account you can take out a free 14 day trial or here might be discounts over the Christmas period. You can them match what you know, such as dates of birth and may find a match with a descendant.

There doesn't seem to be any Lynch family living in the townland in the 1901 Census

You could also write to the parish priest to see if he knows if the descendants of the family are still in the area. He may or may not be able to help, but there is no harm in asking.

  • Hi Jane

I wouldn't discount the birth of the babies on the same day, who were given the same first name with the same parents' names simply because it sounds incredible. It might well be the case!

Make sure you have a go at Ancestry.com if you can and let me know when the priest gets back to you - I am interested to know how you get on.

    Best wishes for 2017
