I think his father is Hugh, b. c1795 Ireland. His mother was Catherine, b/ 1796 maiden name. Catherine shows up in the 1870 US Census in Chicago living with John. I've searched Griffith's Valuation for both John and Hugh and they both appear in Co. westmeath, Kilmacnevan, township of Emper. This is the closest I've come to finding htem in the same locality and wonder if there are addional birth records available for this area.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Totally Lost:
The RC parish for Kilmacnevan civil parish is Milltown in the Diocese of Meath. This past Wednesday, the National Library of Ireland placed all RC parish registers online for free searching. Here is the link to the register for Milltown:

Hopefully, you will find the baptismal record for John. Civil registration of birth in Ireland did not begin until 1864.

Roger,
I thought I'd give you and update on the McCormick research we did on our visit. We went to the Carricmacross workhouse and visited with a geneaologist there, who ws very helpful. We were not able to verify anything in the time we we had, but she gave us some good information about the area.
I was still tracking John McCormick and his wife Mary Hand and there were too many Hand's to be able to narrow it down to her family, but after I got home a new record showed up in the English marriage records showing the marriage of John and Mary. This record proved my earlier research, as in the British records the names of the grooms parents are shown. Imagine my happy dance, when it listed Hugh McCormick and Catherine Bellews as his parents. They were both from Meath, rather than Monaghan, so that's why my Monaghan research hadn't been too effective. I've since found his parents and possible his grandparents. More research is required and I still have not found the father of Mary Hand for sure, but I'm much further along than I was before.
Thanks for your help.
Lynda

Hi Lynda
I am chasing Cormick, Flynn, Fox, Kelly, Mahon....
My Cormick and Flynns were from Westmeath, but SOME docs show them as MCCormicks, maybe a suggestion to broaden the search for cormick/cormack. With the HAND family, I did find a HAND and KELLY baby aroundd 1835 in Longford, maybe have a search for the Ardagh and Moyvow records. Lynch is in my fam but still can't quite work out how.
