Family folklore tells that Catherine, the daughter of the Bishop of Westmeath (obviously not Catholic) eloped with a young man of the household to America.  I'm trying to confirm at least the basics of the info and maybe a time frame.  Can anyone help with this?

  • Hi Jim,

    Thank you for your message.

Do you have any other information on the family in question that you can share? What was Catherine?s surname for example? Do you know where they might have lived? When trying to find information on family history a parish name is one of the most vital pieces of information needed.

It may be the Bishop of Meath and Kildare that you are referring to as this is the name of the Church of Ireland Diocese that would incorporate Westmeath.

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks for your reply, Emma.  I believe Catherine's ( and the Bishop's) surname was Dias.

    Regards,
