Hello, can anyone provide any information relating to Catherine BRENNAN born Mullingar?, Westmeath c1850. Catherine was my paternal great grandmother. She emigrated from Belfast, Co. Antrim on the ship 'Kapunda' 25 Jul 1875 and arrived Townsville, Queensland, Australia 17 Nov 1875. In April 1876 Catheine married my great grandfather William Turner in Queensland. I am intending to visit Ireland in the next 12-18 months and would like to visit Catherine's birthplace and anywhere she might have lived. Any advice gratefully received. Kind regards, Shirley Turner (sturner2701@gmail.com)

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Roots Ireland has two records in Mullingar around 1850. See transcriptions below. I assume you don't have her parents names?

Many thanks Roger. Baptism dated 11-Nov-1847 looks most likely...I have just checked Catherine's burial record in the Lockhart General Cemetery, New South Wales. It has age 60yrs...date of death 03 Mar 1908. Catherine was buried in the Roman Catholic section whilst her husband was buried in the Anglican section. Tragically, they died together in a house fire.

Your info has spurred me on!

Hello again Roger. I've just found some 2013 notes recorded by the wife of a second cousin which state: Catherine Brennan was born c1854 in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, she was a Catholic, she could not read or write, although her father was a school master. Her parents were Dennis Brennan and Catherine Newman...?

Hi Roger, I have now located Catherine Brennan's marriage registration dated 03 Apr 1876 at Beggum's Hotel, Millchester, Queensland, Australia. Her age is listed as 22 years (her husband William Turner, a miner, 33 years born South Australia of Cornish parents) although the ship Kapunda's passenger list, which sailed from Belfast, Ireland on 25 Jul 1875, has Catherine's age as 25 years. Catherine's parent's names are recorded as Dennis Brennan (Schoolmaster) and Catherine Newman. Catherine has signed the marriage register with an "X" (her mark). Her birthplace is recorded as Mullingar, Ireland. She was married according to the rites of the Presbyterian Church although it seems that she was buried in the Roman Catholic section of the Lockhart Cemetery, New South Wales, in 1908. Can you suggest where I should look for a baptismal record? Regards, Shirley

Shirley:
Here is a link to the Presbyterian church in Mullingar http://www.mullingarpresbyterian.com/ I would contact them and see what they can tell you about 1850 era records.
Roots Ireland has the Mullingar Church of Ireland baptismal records starting in 1849 so if she was baptized there 1849 or later, the record should have come up on my query where I identified the other two records.

Thank you again Roger. I have emailed the Presbyterian Church in Mullingar with a request. Where would I look for possible information about Catherine's parents, Dennis Brennan (schoolmaster) and Catherine Newman?

I am still looking for information re Catherine BRENNAN c1850-1908. She emigrated from Belfast, Co. Antrim, on the ship 'Kapunda' 25 Jul 1875 and arrived Townsville, Queensland, Australia 17 Nov 1875. I am aware that emigrants were often a lot older than stated on passenger lists etc. Catherine signed with her mark "X" on her marriage certificate 3 April 1876. Her birthplace is listed as Mullingar, Ireland (Westmeath or Donegal?). Her father's name is registered as Dennis Brennan, schoolteacher, and her mother as Catherine Newman.
I recently found a reference to a Catherine BRENNAN baptised 14 May 1844 in the Parish of Rochfortbridge, Diocese Meath and Co. Westmeath. Her father is listed as Dennis Brennan and her mother Catherine Falt. (Sponsors John Mangan & Catherine Beog?).
Is it possible that Catherine's birth was registered in Mullingar and she was baptised in Rochfortbridge?
Catherine's remains (she died in a house fire) were buried in the Catholic section of Lockhart Cemetery, NSW Australia, in 1908.
I will be in Ireland in September and would like to follow up any tangible leads. Any help gratefully received.
Kind regards,
Shirley Turner

Welcome back!
Rochfortbridge is the RC parish just to the south of Mullingar. There was no civil registration until 1864 so the only record would be a baptism. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland which has Rochfortbridge records and the 1844 record did not come up. What site did you use to find the 1844 record?

Catherine gave her birthpalce as Mullingar...maybe that is where she grew up (but I don't think I have seen a reference to a county)?
The shipping agents were Samuel Gowan & Co., 4 Corporation Street Belfast.
Are there any surviving shipping agents' records?
