My Great grandfather, James Murray married Margaret Clinton, Mayne, Westmeath in 1864.  In 1882 he and his wife and 7 children moved to the US.  I believe James had other relatives in the area as I see other Murray's as sponsors for baptisms.  I have no names of his siblings and would like to find more Murray's.

  • I have a Murray connection.  My 3x great-grandmother (mtDNA line K1c2) was from Clonmellon (Roman Catholic) Parish, Co Meath, Ireland.  Her (alleged) sister Ann Battersby b. Sep 1808,  m. James Murray, Feb 1805, Killua, Meath, Ireland.  Keep in mind that there seem to be many with the same name and parish register information is not always enough to make certain you have the correct person/ppl.  James & Ann had at least 7 children - Patrick, Mary, Margaret, Matthew, Ann, John, & Honora.  The parish register mentions multiple Murrays, including one priest, also James, I think.

Baptism  14 Feb 1805 • Killua, Meath, Ireland;  14 Feb, Bapt. James, Parents Mark(?) Murray and Peggy Sheridan; Sprs. Andrew Carroll and Cathe. Kilrush, Moynihan, Killua.

18 Sep 1808 • Clonmellon, Westmeath, Ireland, Baptism: Ann parents James Battersby & Honor Farmer. Sprs: Hugh Smyth & Mary Duffy. Ballyfore, Killua.

Marriage 19 Feb 1833 • Clonmellon Parish, Meath & Westmeath, Ireland;  19 Feb 1833, Jas. Murray & Ann Battersby, witnesses Daniel Leery & Mary Bradly, by Father P.P.

Please let me know if you match my family and/or find more on the Battersby family (or the Murrays).  I am fully DNA tested, on FTDNA & Ancestry.  I also have siblings and cousins who should match.  Regards.

  • Thank you so much for that information.  I had noticed a few other Murray's and will heed your advice and be careful about assuming they are the same.  Many of the names are found in the generations I have located, so may be a good tip. I will keep you informed as I uncover additional information.  I have my DNA test from Ancestry.com.

  • At this point, I don't notice anything which would tell me there is a connection between our families, mine from Brownstown, Westmeath, Ireland - Clonmellon parish.
