I am trying to find information on my 2nd great grandfather, Patrick Maguire. He may have had a brother Philip and a sister, Roseanne or Rosanna. He was born about 1819. Philip was born about 1826-1830. They both emmigrated to the United States between 1845-1860. They both lived and died in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Patrick's death certificate in 1904 lists his parents as Patrick Maguire and Rose O'Toole. Philip's death certificate in 1914 lists parents as John Maguire and Rose Towle.

Phllip served in the United States Navy during the Civil War. He collected a pension after his service and had to reapply several times. In his paperwork he lists his birthplace 3 different ways as County Meath, Westmeath, and Oldcastle. He gives birth dates as 20 Sep 1830, 20 Sep 1826, 30 Sep 1830, and 20 Sep 1829.

On the 1870 United States Federal Census an Anthony Maguire is living across the street from Patrick Maguire. One year later in 1871 the two families are living in the same house. I found a marriage record for Anthony in Lowell, Massachusetts in the early 1850's. He married an Elizabeth Claffay. Anthony's parents were Andrew Maguire and Rose Whitney. I believe Anthony and Patrick may have been cousins.

Roseanne or Rosanna married a Dennis O'Brien in Lawrence,Massachusetts.

I have no proof that Patrick, Philip, and Roseanne (Roseanna) are siblings but I believe they are as a result of a DNA test that matched me to a relative of Philip's.

There is also a possibility that Rose O'Toole (Towle) Maguire may have also emmigrated to Lawrence,Massachusetts.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Kathy,

If they were from Westmeath that would be the Parish of Castlepollard, Foyran, Rathgraff and Lickbla.  I checked the Tithe records and the only McGuire is a Michael in 1826, Stonestown Townland.

As far as Oldcastle and surrounding Townlands there are several options and you may have to contact Father Ray Kelley in Oldcastle or Sean McCabe (local historian).

Give me a call if you are in the states ay 847-778-3473 or email jmccabe51@gmail.com
