If I have the right couple, Mathew Briody was possibly born un Mullingar c.1826 and His wife Martha (nee Pedley) in England c.1836.  Mathew may have died in Mulingar in 1872 aged 46 and Martha in Mullingar in 1916 aged 80.  I can find no marriage in Ireland for them but they may have married in Birmingham, Warwickshire in 1857 where a first child William Henry Briody was born.  The marriage I have took place in St Peters Birminham  using the Latin forms  of name (Math?um Briody , Martham Pedley, with fathers Patricii Briody and Richardi Pedley respectively).  A son of this couple, William Henry, was baptised at St Chad, Birmingham the following year, again using the Latin form (Gulielmus Henricus Briody).  They then do not apear in any records, including census reports until children born to a couple with the same names(Mathew Briody and Martha Pedley) appear in Mullingar.  The children born and registered there were James Joseph Briody (1865), Rose Ann Briody (1868) and Mathew Briody (1872).

If these are the same couple, is there anything in their death or other records that confirm it and, if so, what is oikely to have happened to them between William's birth in 1858 and James' birth in 1865?  Is there some record that Mathew Briody may have left Mullingar for a period of time somewhere in those intervening years?

I live in Australia, which is where James Joseph Briody migrated to sometime between 1881 and 1885 so any help you can give would be much appreciated.

  • Hi Gloria,

it seems we are related! Rose Ann Briody was my great grandmother. I have been looking into this side of the family and have essentially reached the same conclusions as you and have pretty much the same questions.

I can add a few more bits of information to the story.

I did get a copy of Martha Briody's death certificate from 1916 with Rose Ann listed as the witness.. so looks like she was living in Mullingar dueing the Census. I can't find her either!

Also I got a copy of the marriage certificate of Mathew Briody and Martha Pedley from Birmingham. The only extra information it has is that Mathew's father is listed as Patrick Briody from Ireland.. which doesn't rule this out ..

    I will keep digging!

  • Hi Paul, You would be related to my daughters rather than myself as their father, my former husband, is descended from Rose Ann's brother James Joseph Briody.  I have been doing further research on this line for them.  I'm not absolutely certain how and when James came to Australia but the nearest I can get is that he arrived in Nov 1882 on the ship "Roma". That James was aged 17 which would the right age.

He married Margaret Martha O'Meara in Charters Towers, Qld in March 1886 and they had 3 children :James Joseph (1888-1951); Patrick Matthew (1890 - 1938) and Margaret Martha (1891 - 1969).

The middle child, Patrick Matthew Briody, married Frances Elizabeth Warren in Charters Towers, Qld in 1916 and they also had three children: Frances Mary Margaret; Patrick Matthew (1917 -1998) and Joyce Alice (1920 -2003).  Joyce Alice was my former mother-in-law, the grandmother of my daughters.

Anything you could add to the history of Mathew and Martha (nee Pedley) Briody would be very much appreciated. There seems to be a big brick wall there somewhere. I'm wondering if Mathew was a soldier  posted to England where he met Martha.  Does her death cert show where she was born?

So many questions, so few answers ...as yet.

    Regards

    Gloria
