Just returned from a visit to the church and a nice chat with Father at Taghmon school outside Crookedwood. My great great great grandparents, James Cleary and Catherine Nowlan were married at the church November 23, 1815. Their first four children were baptized there as well. Anne (1816), Matthew (1818), Mary (1819), Catherine (1822). Their fifth child, Thomas, was born in Cornwall, Ontario Canada in 1824. Their sixth child, James--my great great grandfather--was born in Cornwall as well, in 1827, followed by Brigitte (1829) and Richard (1831). Their baptismal records and subsequent marriages and children were recorded at St. Andrew's West church in Cornwall. I have a lot of those records, and have traced most of the family for the first two or three generations. (And of course, the family of my great great grandfather James) to the present.

We had a wonderful time visiting the church and the area--were there to watch the all-Ireland Hurling championship at the pub in crookedwood, which was a wonderful experience. Getting a sense of the place and its peaceful beauty was very special to me. Understanding from local historian Ruth Illingworth the potential reasons for the grandparents to emigrate to Canada was fascinating.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Thanks for posting your experiences in Tahgmon. Glad you saw Tipperary beat Kilkenny in the Hurling final. The Gaelic Football replay final will be on Saturday October 1st with Dublin and Mayo. (They played to a draw last Sunday resulting in the need for the replay).

We have an Ireland Reaching Out Chronicle facility http://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy   Maybe you would be willing to post information on your ancestors. All the best!

  • Do you have any photos that you could share of Taghmon or Crookedwood? My 3rd Great Grandmother was baptized in Taghmon, married my 3rd Great Grandfather there and their first born was baptized there. I do not know for sure where they lived but would love any information on the area.

  • C.L. Browne,                                                                                                                                                                                               I wonder if the "Father" you mentioned might have been Fr. Declan Smith from the Taghmon Parochial House.  Fr. Smith recently sent me some burial information from Taghmon Cemetery which he said was no longer in use.  The records were for Jeffrey Dolan d. 2/26/1920 and his sister Elizabeth Dolan d. 3/29/1927.  I believe Jeffrey's father, also Jeffrey/Geofrey (m. Anne Tormy in Taghmon) is the brother to my gg grandmother Elizabeth Dolan (m. Michael Roughan/Rohan in Parteen, Co. Clare).

I can't seem to get beyond the 1830's marriage of Jeffrey/Geofrey Dolan and Anne Tormy, nor can I find death/burial information prior to the 1920's I've mentioned above.  Would you have any suggestion where I might locate any additional records?  I have scrolled thru the Taghmon R.C. records at the  NLI without any success.

    Thanks for posting!
