My wife Carol is a Rickerby and I've been looking at her family history for a short time now.
Have managed to track back to her gg grand father Robert Rickerby On Robert's death cert shows he died 30 Aug 1902, Halswell, Canterbury, NZ aged 70, therefore born ca 1832 - states he was born Ireland, father (looks like) John, no mother given
Also shows he was twice married in Ireland - first to Ann Whealen (6 kids in Ireland) and 2nd to Sarah Miller (8 kids in NZ) - he came with Sarah and kids from first marriage to Ann to Canterbury, NZ in 1873 on board Cardigan Castle (family search) His marriage cert to Ann Whelan (28 Sept 1852 in Shillelagh) shows he was a laborer residing in Carnewand his father was John Rickerby also a laborer. Ann Whelan is recorded as a spinster, residing in Tomacork and her father is William Whelan, pensioner. They were married in the registrars office, Shillelagh. Ann died 21 Jan 1869 Tomacork aged 36 therefore born ca 1833 On the marriage cert to Sarah Miller (19 Oct 1871), Robert is shown as a widower, laborer and resident of Carnew. His father again is shown as John Rickerby, laborer. Sarah Miller is recorded as spinster, servant, resident of Carnew and her father is Joseph Miller, laborer. Note they were married in the Church of Hollyfort, Wexford, (United Church of England & Ireland) Sarah remarried after the death of Robert and died 16 Jan 1923 in Christchurch, NZ - from the various records I have she was born ca 1853 and death cert states she was born Co Wicklow
I'm really unsure on how to progress this. Would absolutely love assistance with info on Robert and his wives Ann and Sarah - in particular their birth details, who their parents were and & where they may have lived etc). Because of the number of Rickerbys living in the area and the possibility of other Robert Rickerby's I've come to dead stop at the moment.
Would appreciate any help please and love to hear from anyone who could point me in the right direction. I also have number of certificates (childrens birth etc) if they would be of use

The main record sources available to you will be church records and civil records. (civil registration only became mandatory in Ireland in 1864)
Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
There are a couple of places online where you can search for records:
www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

You could also try checking in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. They do not offer any genealogical information but can sometimes be used to tie person to a specific place. There are two:

and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
