Hello,  I have been researching my Martin ancestors.  My great great grandfather was Richard Martin from Wexford Co.  He was born around 1824 and immigrated to Canada around 1850.  He had other siblings that also immigrated around that time, although  not all at the same time.  When I first started all this, I didn't know all the other siblings names, but through various people, I was able to find who I think were his siblings  (Margaret, Frances, Thomas, Robert, John, William, Mary and Hester/Esther) and his parents, John Martin and Esther Swain.

His sister, Margaret, married James Cooke while in Ireland.  I was able to locate a marriage license for a Margaret Martin and James Cooke married Mar 1, 1848 in the parish of Clonmore.  It lists Margaret's residence as Ballyellin, Clonmore, Wexford County.  The father is listed as John Martin and one of the witnesses was Thomas Martin.  The date would be correct because their first child was born in 1849 in Ireland.

I have been able to find a John and Richard Martin in the tithe applotment books, in Ballyellin (Ballyellan) and Ballinavary, Parish of Clonmore.  I can locate Ballinavary but not Ballyellin on maps.  There is also a Thomas Martin in Knocknagrass, Parish of Clonmore.  Both Richard and John were tithe defaulters in 1831.  In the tithe applotment books, there is a Richard Martin Sr and a Richard Martin Jr.  I suspect that Richard Jr, Thomas and John are brothers and Richard Sr is their father.  I can find marriage license records for all of them but I haven't been able to find baptismal records online for any of them.  I'm not sure if they even exist.  I'm not in a position to be able to travel to Ireland, although I sure would like to.

I have two questions, where is/was Ballyellin, Parish of Clonmore?  I can find a Ballyellin in a different parish, but it's not the correct one.  Is it possible it was part of another townland, or the name of the Martin family farm?  I don't believe there are any Martins left in the parish of Clonmore, at least there weren't any in the 1901 or 1911 censuses.

Also, are there any baptismal records available online for COI churches in the parish of Clonmore and if so, where would I find them?  I have found records from other churches but none specifically for churches in the parishes of Clonmore.

TIA

  • Hi Debbie,

I just wanted to start by thanking you for all of this information you have posted.. Richard Martin is also my great grandfather (x4) which I recently discovered on Familysearch.org

This website does not provide anymore information than you have already but I shall do some digging around myself and let you know if I come up with anything further. I am located in London, Ontario though most of my family is located in White Rock BC.

    My relation is as follows

    Richard Martin & Lucy Bowles

Esther Anne Martin married Johnson Huston (my maiden name)

Martin William Huston married Mable Glass

William Huston married Irene Young (Irene went by Bernice, this is my great grand mother whom I lived with until I was 5)

Just thought I would provide that information incase you are a closer relative and to see where we split off.

Hope you are well and thank you again for this great information,

    Krista Luther
