Hi,

I trying to trace my family in Wexford.  My Great Grandfather was John Benjamin Cooke. I have found a family of Cooke's residing in Pollpeasty in 1901 but they were not there in 1911.The family members names seem to be correct but I cannot find birth records for them online.

I live in Australia so any help I receive I would be grateful.

Regards,

Colleen Taylor.

  • for reference - this looks like the 1901 census for the Cooke family you mentioned :

      Cooke household, Pollpeasty

The head of the household is Mary Ann age 59 and a widow and she's born Co. Kilkenny, her  sons and a daughter are present, as are a daughter in-law (son George's wife) and two grand-children, all of these born Co. Wexford. The family is Church of Ireland. I dont see a John Benjamin - was that the name of Mary Ann's husband ?

The townland of Pollpeasty is in Killegney civil parish, and not far from the town of Clonroche.

The births for those born after the start of civil registration in 1864 should be included on the BMD Index on FamilySearch - e.g. for one of the grandchildren, and the daughter :

    Name : Joseph John Cooke
    Event Type : Birth
Quarter and Year : Jan - Mar 1901
    Registration District Enniscorthy
    Volume 4 / Page 525

    Name Alice Cooke
    Event Type Birth
Quarter and Year : Jul - Sep 1881
    Registration District Enniscorthy
    Volume 4 / Page 628

You can use index references to order research certs from the GRO (€4) which will show further details.

  • looks like John Benjamin Cooke is a son of Mary Anne, so brother to George, Alice and Samuel - based on this possible BMD Index entry, and extracted birth :

    Name : John Benjamin Cooke
    Event Type : Birth
    Registration Year 1873
    Registration District : Enniscorthy
    Volume 14 / Page 697

this cross-references (name, year and page number references match) with this extracted civil birth - which shows parents as William Cooke and Mary Anne Steuart.   A research cert would show a few more detail such as place of birth for John B, his. father's occupation,  and usual residence etc..
